Searching for peace amongst chaos.
That was the caption of this photo back in 2019 by this kayaker as he was going over the local waterfalls.
Tommy Piros a local whitewater kayaker, sponsored by Jackson Kayak, a co-founder of the Cuyahoga Falls Fest-(when he was 17), has done so much for those that want to get into or improve their skills in whitewater paddling.
I (Robb) spoke to him once on the phone, but never got the chance to meet him in person. I met his parents, by accident, because it’s not everyday you see two whitewater boats sitting at Lakeside beach.
After speaking to them, it was easy to see why he was addicted (and so good) at kayaking. They were whitewater guides, Tommy and his brother were in kayaks long before they could walk.
If you’ve ever seen any of the videos or news pieces about kayakers going over the falls at Cascade Park, he would be the guy.
But it’s not his kayaking skills, or his accomplishments that made him bad ass. It’s the effect you have on people. And to see the outpouring of love, shock, sadness, and all the other waves of emotion that are flooding my personal social media channels as they react to his untimely passing is what makes him a bad ass.
Tommy was only 24 years old and there was a Gofund me that was originally setup as a way to help with medical bills is ongoing to help his family during this horrible time.
It’s funny how that a social media photo caption has stuck with me for four years. It’s been my mantra at work, with life, whenever anything seemed to heavy for me to deal with. But as I learn about the passing of another local kayaker, and part of Lorain’s kayak history, I feel this caption rings out even more.
