Sometimes God opens a door when you least expect it.
Today on deployment with Christ In Action, we were working on a home belonging to a woman named Carla and her mom. We were removing wet drywall, flooring, and insulation from the home after the damage they had experienced.
Yesterday, an uninvited contractor had stopped by trying to sell Carla on having the house redone. So when a gentleman walked into the house today and wanted to talk with me, I honestly thought he was another contractor.
One of my crew members came and got me, and as I started talking with him, he introduced himself as the new director of the Fuller Group who we have worked with in prior disasters. This organization provides home repairs at no cost to qualifying families in certain areas.
He hadn’t come looking for Carla. He didn’t know who we were. He simply saw our red shirts, saw us working on the home, and stopped because he wanted to find out what was going on and whether they could help.
We walked through the house together. He was very interested, so he called his construction manager and his wife, and they came out and walked through the home with us.
Honestly, I was afraid this house might have to be torn down. There is significant rot, including damage around some of the sill plates and studs. Parts of the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room floors were in very poor condition.
But after looking at everything, they believe the home can be repaired and brought up to modern standards—including the electrical and plumbing—and potentially rebuilt for this family at no cost to them.
Think about that.
We showed up to tear out what was damaged. God may have used that work to put the right people in the right place at exactly the right time.
We don’t know every detail yet, and there are still criteria and steps that have to be worked through. But today, a family that may have been facing the loss of their home was given something they desperately needed:
HOPE.
And once again, I’m reminded that we may think we’re simply showing up to serve, but God is already working ahead of us.

God is good. And sometimes He sends the answer walking right through the front door.
