Have you had a chance to get creative at Elk Creek Glass yet? We invite you to discover this studio & make some unique glass art here in Elkton.
Who are we? Avi Zohar and his wife and business partner, Heather McNeill, are the owners of Elk Creek Glass in Elkton, Oregon. Avi has been working as a glass artist since 1990. He started out fusing glass and learned to blow glass to use up the scraps from his glass fusing shop. As an artist, he is known for unique pieces that rely on techniques from both fusing and blowing glass. His work has been displayed at the White House and featured in several galleries across the nation.
Heather grew up in Coos Bay and has had a lifelong love for the beauty of Elkton. She's worked in construction and the energy sector for most of her career. She owned her own consulting business for many years. Avi grew up in Alaska, where he loved living a rural life that taught him how to be a jack of all trades and how to be part of a tight-knit community. His journey into being a glass artist started in the construction trades, building and installing windows. Then he dabbled in stained glass work, which led him down the road to being a full-time glass artist. For many years, he operated Zohar Glass in Medford, Oregon.
When they moved to Elkton in 2021, they wanted to shift gears and have a studio that focused on teaching. Elk Creek Glass opened for classes in 2023. They book classes by appointment to accommodate the number of students and the skill level of the students. They've had students ranging in age from 8 to their 80s. Students have come from near and far (England, Texas, Colorado!) Many have come as a family outing, making memories together at the holidays, or while they were vacationing in the region.
Avi and Heather's big dream is to spark excitement and creativity in people. Glass art is not just beautiful, but it's fun to make. Time stops, and outside worries disappear in the glass studio. The pursuit of making beautiful things out of glass leads to learning about chemistry, art, tools, and fire. And it can be transformative in teaching life lessons about chasing a vision, mishaps along the way, and how things can look very differently in different light and circumstances. We hope to see you soon. 😀
