Kratom is a supplement used by some people for a variety of reasons including pain relief, self-treatment of anxiety and depression, or to reduce the discomfort associated with opioid withdrawal. Even though Kratom is legal in Maryland, serious risks are associated with its use.

People who use kratom may experience symptoms of addiction, withdrawal, and overdose. These risks are greater when using additional substances like alcohol or fentanyl. There is also potential for physical and psychological consequences.

Narcan and rescue breathing are key to successfully responding to and reversing an overdose. Free Narcan and training are available from the Cecil County Health Department (410-996-5106) and Voices of Hope (443-993-7055).

Help is available now for individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. Call the 24/7 Cecil Addiction Treatment Coordination Hotline (CATCH) at 443-245-3257 to speak with someone about treatment, risk management, Narcan, and other support.

If you believe someone is experiencing an overdose, call 9-1-1 immediately for medical attention.
