Not every visit needs your agenda. Some of the best ones happen when you follow theirs.

It's tempting to always have a plan, an activity, a topic, a game in mind. But letting your mentee choose tells them something bigger: their interests matter. Their lead is worth following.

You don't have to entertain them. You just have to show up ready to go wherever they take you.

One hour a week. Let them lead the way.

Spotted: a kid who always asks how your week went.

It’s not on a report card. It doesn’t win a trophy. But a 14-year-old who checks on the adult across the table is showing real empathy.

If you see it, say it. “You always ask about me. That means a lot” might be the first time anyone named it.

There’s a 3rd grade boy in Elkhorn who loves PE, science and all things sports. He’s got his sneakers on, and he’s ready for that moment.

All it takes is one hour a week with someone who shows up.

Think about the last time someone really listened to you.

Not waiting for their turn to talk. Not checking their phone. Just listening.

Now read what this student said again.

They didn’t say they needed someone with all the answers. They didn’t ask for advice or an expert. They asked for someone who will listen.

If you’ve held off on mentoring because you’re not sure you’d know what to say, this is your answer. You don’t need the right words. You need to show up, one hour a week, and listen.

Some kids in Elkhorn are still waiting for that person.

We didn’t recruit these four mentors.
One night in Lincoln did. ❤️

On September 19, they went to watch the Huskers play North Dakota.

They stayed to see Nebraska honor Dr. Tom Osborne, who founded TeamMates with his wife, Nancy.

Then they went their separate ways, and that same weekend, each one applied to become a mentor.

This morning, all four walked into the same Elkhorn TeamMates training and found out they had shared the same night.

Four came to the game. Four left to carry on his legacy. Four students will soon have mentors.

Somewhere in Elkhorn this month, a kid will unfold a little slip of paper and read something about themselves they didn’t know.

This month’s TeamMates activity is A Jar of Me. Mentees fill a jar with everything that makes them who they are. Drawings, words, pictures, anything goes.

Mentors, here’s your part. When they’re done, add one more thing. Write down a strength you’ve spotted in them, fold it up, and drop it in.

They might not have thought to include it. That’s exactly why it belongs there.

Spotted: a kid who can teach you any game in five minutes.

Rules, strategy, the one trick nobody else knows. All before the lunch bell.

That’s a real gift, and they may not even see it as one.

3 in 10 students say no adult at school recognizes what they’re good at. Most of us never found our strengths on our own. Someone pointed at them first.

Sometimes the best way to get to know someone isn't a big question. It's a fun one.

Try this with your mentee: "What are 3 words your friends would use to describe you?" It's quick, it's a little silly, and it tells you more than you'd expect, how they see themselves, what they're proud of, maybe even what they wish people noticed more.
