Long before Route 66 travelers passed through Litchfield, the city was known for its windmill manufacturing history.

Today, the windmill near the Route 66 Museum stands as a tribute to that legacy and an industry that helped put Litchfield on the map.

Places like this are a reminder that some of the most interesting stories along the Mother Road are found when we slow down and look a little closer. 🤟

Have you ever stopped in Litchfield?

Elkhart, Illinois is a tiny community along the Mother Road, but it is packed with character. The kind of place where every building seems to have a story to tell.

The railroad tracks still cut through town, grain elevators tower above the surrounding farmland, and Route 66 history is woven into the brick buildings that line the streets. Standing there, it is easy to imagine travelers passing through decades ago on their way west, chasing opportunity, adventure, or simply the promise of seeing what was around the next bend.

What struck me most about Elkhart was how much history has been preserved in such a small place. The Route 66 murals, the beautifully restored Elkhart Station building, the veterans memorial, and the quiet streets all serve as reminders that some of the most memorable stops are not the biggest attractions.

I planned to make a quick stop. Instead, I found myself slowing down, walking the streets, taking in the history, and appreciating the details that make places like Elkhart special.

That is one of the things I love most about Route 66. The journey is not just about the famous landmarks. It is about the small towns that still carry the spirit of the Mother Road and invite you to stay a little longer than you planned. 🤟

There is something timeless about seeing Route 66 light up at night.

The neon signs, the glow against the dark sky, and the history behind every display make the Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds feel like stepping back into the golden age of American road trips.

Places like this are more than roadside attractions. They capture the spirit of adventure, freedom, and exploration that made Route 66 legendary in the first place.

If you ever make the trip through Springfield, do yourself a favor and experience it after sunset. The atmosphere completely changes once the neon comes alive. 🤟

One thing I’m learning out here on Route 66 is that adventure still exists if you are willing to go looking for it.

Stopping at the Route 66 Experience honestly felt like stepping into a piece of living American history. Places like this remind me how many dreamers, travelers, and free spirits have chased something bigger by simply getting out on the road and seeing where it leads.

That is exactly what this journey has been about for me.

More exploring. More experiences. More memories that would never happen sitting still.

The open road has a way of pulling you out of routine and back into living life with curiosity, freedom, and excitement again. 🤟

There’s something really cool about small towns that fully embrace their weirdness and nostalgia instead of trying to look like everywhere else.

Atlanta, Illinois instantly made me smile. Giant statues, classic Route 66 history, and roadside Americana everywhere you look. It felt like stepping back into an era when road trips were about the journey just as much as the destination.

This is why I love taking the backroads. You never know when you’ll stumble across a place that becomes one of the highlights of the adventure.

If you love roadside attractions, nostalgia, and classic Americana, Atlanta deserves a stop. Some places remind you that adventure is supposed to be fun. 🤟

Long before Interstate 55 carried travelers through Illinois, Route 66 followed a much different path.

This stretch of road near Towanda became known as Dead Man’s Curve, one of the most dangerous sections of the Mother Road. Built in 1927, the narrow 16-foot-wide highway made a sharp turn that caught many drivers off guard.

Accidents were so common that the curve earned a reputation feared by travelers for decades.

A house near the curve was reportedly struck so many times that its porch had to be rebuilt repeatedly before a truck eventually knocked the entire structure off its foundation.

Today, it’s hard to imagine the danger as I cruised through in my Rivian with the camper in tow, following the same historic roadway that once challenged generations of Route 66 travelers.

Some roads take you somewhere.

Others remind you how far we’ve come.

My Route 66 adventure took me right to the historic 1903 Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Pontiac, Illinois, and on this Memorial Day, it is a powerful reminder of bravery and sacrifice.

Standing an impressive 56 feet tall over the Old Courthouse lawn, this 168-ton masterpiece was carved from solid granite and topped with a 9-foot bronze statue to honor the area's fallen heroes.

On June 3, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt stood right here on the courthouse grounds to officially dedicate it. It remains one of the coolest historical structures remaining along this section of the Mother Road.

Drop a comment if you have ever passed through Pontiac.
