A pair of Midwest Water Stewards teams have been out and about working hard and enjoying the beautiful sunshine that Michigan had to offer.

Quinten, Molly and Evan spent some time Wednesday doing stream profiles and installing temperature loggers in some streams in Kalkaska County. Evan tested the limits of his waders but managed to avoid filling them up with water.

On the same day, Maria and Gabby were doing a data download in Missaukee County.

All this work allows us to provide the most thorough and accurate data to our farm clients so they can ensure they are not having an adverse effect on the water supply.

When we talk with farmers who are interested in joining the Midwest Water Stewards network, our first question is always the same:

“What will you do if the data shows your irrigation practices are negatively impacting the local water supply?”

And every time, the answer is the same:

“We’ll do whatever it takes to fix it.”

Farmers care deeply about the land and water they depend on. Responsible stewardship isn’t just good practice, it’s essential to continuing the work they love: growing food and helping feed the world.

We’re proud to work alongside more than 100 farms across Michigan and northern Indiana that are committed to making a positive impact on their communities, the environment and future generations.

If you’re a farmer who is not currently monitoring water usage, we encourage you to reach out to us. We know you care about protecting natural resources. Today, collecting data is one of the best ways to demonstrate that commitment.

MEET OUR TEAM!
Molly Landrum has already learned — and contributed — quite a bit in a very short time since joining the Midwest Water Stewards team as a summer intern.

Molly, a geology major at Cedarville University, will spend the next few months collecting stream velocity profiles, assisting in monitoring well data downloads and helping with other stream work.

Here is a bit more about Molly:

What do you enjoy most about working with Midwest Water Stewards?
“They have shown me how much they value doing good science to serve and protect their clients and the environment. I love the values they hold all their employees to. It creates a flourishing workspace and allows them to serve the community efficiently. I have also loved that I get the opportunity to learn under experts every day. I am constantly learning new things and I am excited for the opportunity to grow in the experiences and knowledge they provide me this summer.”

Why is this work important to you?
“It is important to me to be a steward of creation. What we have is a blessing and should be protected to the best of our abilities. The good science standards that Midwest Water Stewards chooses to apply and uphold is very important to me. Efficient scientific practice is important for the environment and for the communities that it affects, and thus far I have enjoyed the opportunity to apply that with this job.”

What are your favorite things to do outdoors?
“I love to hike, especially out West. I like to be outside doing anything related to geology (like rock collecting or field work). I love to sit outside and read, or sit in the rain/watch storms roll in.”

The Michigan State University Mobile Irrigation Lab offers free evaluations to farmers across the state to help improve efficiency in both water usage and energy consumption.

The Mobile Irrigation Lab team:
• Evaluates center-pivot systems, including uniformity, pressure and flow-rate testing
• Offers management plans to repair and/or upgrade the current irrigation system
• Estimates water and energy cost savings
• Provides a customized irrigation scheduling guide

Farmers are good stewards of the environment. Kudos to Iott Seed Farms and all the farms across Michigan who have taken advantage of the important services provided by the Mobile Irrigation Lab.

The new interns are here! The new interns are here!

Project hydrogeologist Maria Swearingen and new interns Evan and Molly took advantage of a nice Michigan day earlier this week to download data in Cass County for Midwest Water Stewards clients Berrybrook Enterprises and High Quality Farms.

The Midwest Water Stewards team held its annual Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) meeting last week. We planned the year's work, set goals, discussed issues, set our budget and more.

Utilizing the EOS system helps us bring clarity to our goals and ensures consistent ex*****on of our goals, which allows us to provide the best possible service to our clients in Michigan and northern Indiana.

Another benefit of this year's meeting: A client allowed us to use their lake house, which allowed us to meet offsite and focus fully on our meeting. We spent the entire day on this and enjoyed lunch at Flat Rock Grill in Edwardsburg. It was an awesome day with an awesome team!

MEET OUR TEAM!
If you see Quinten Hunsberger in a stream, be sure to stop and say hello. He’s not fishing. He’s just collecting data or installing/repairing equipment.

Quinten is a project hydrologist who joined the Midwest Water Stewards team as an intern in 2023 and full-time in 2024. He has a degree in environmental science from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. While in school, he worked at the Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams and interned at the GIS Department of Kosciusko County.

Here is a bit more about Quinten:

What do you enjoy most about working with Midwest Water Stewards?
“I enjoy the variety of work that I am able to do. I'm always getting to learn new things.”

Why is this work important to you?
“I enjoy collecting data and seeing that the data that I collected makes a real impact on our clients and the people we interact with.”

Why is water/the environment in Michigan and northern Indiana worth preserving?
“We are very blessed in this part of the world with abundant freshwater resources, and we shouldn't take that blessing for granted. Water is one of the most precious resources on the planet, so responsibly using the water that we have is vitally important.”

What are your favorite things to do outdoors?
“I love to go for runs and hikes outdoors, especially when the weather is nice.”

That sky! ☀️☀️☀️

The Midwest Water Stewards team has been out in full force — and enjoying the beautiful weather — in Michigan this week performing data downloads to help our clients track data and ensure they are not having an adverse effect on the water supply. Todd Feenstra spent some time in the Upper Peninsula, Maria Swearingen is in Northern Michigan and Quinten Hunsberger has mid-Michigan covered.

These photos are from Maria's visits to Iott Seed Farms in Kalkaska County and Kitchen Farms, Inc. in Antrim County. We live in a beautiful area that is worth caring for!

Farmers are the original conservationists. They take the responsibility to protect the natural resources that allow them to grow food to feed the world very seriously. They know that passing the family farm on to the next generation requires them to take responsibility for their farm practices now.

Midwest Water Stewards is proud to partner with farmers in Michigan and northern Indiana to monitor water usage to ensure they are not having a negative impact on the environment. Do you own a farm? Do you want to join us? Email us at [email protected].
