May 13's meeting brought Sharry Blazier, Director of Elgin Public Museum, with a fascinating talk on the local August 11, 1976 re-enactment of the LaSalle Expedition in which Robert Cavelier,Sieur de La Salle’s crew navigated the new world and claimed the entire Mississippi Valley as "Louisiana" in1682. In a re-enactment, a local group was formed with 16 students and 6 adults. They paddled and hiked 3,300 miles from Montreal to the Gulf of Mexico over a challenging period of 8 months. Her story and photos painted a vivid picture of the effort, which included many dangers and much exertion in self-made canoes, oars, and supplies. The group is planning a 50-year reunion here for August 22.

On April 15 we hosted Dr. Brittany Barber, Executive Director of Hamilton Wings. a local arts enrichment program for kids ages 6 to 13. Starting last October, Dr. Brittany Barber restored the program after the passing of its founder. Dr. Jones. The program serves kids whose abilities have too often been ignored. Here kids can meet and develop their own arts accomplishments from scratch, like their current opera titled "When We are Older" at ECC Art Center, June 27th. Hamilton Wings is an in-residence ensemble at Elgin Community college which houses their SCORE (opera) program. They also have after school programs including Art Space and Girls in Motion. Hamilton Wings is actively seeking students who want to use the power of their voice!

April 8 featured Elgin Chief of Police Ana Lalley. Ana joined the force 30 years ago and has served as chief since 2018. Today 65% of the police force is under 25 years of age. The force is completely up-to-date, using body cams for 9 years and drones for 6 to 7 years. They started a Youth Empowerment Program 6 years ago. They maintain an active mental wellness unit, and now have a police chaplain. April 1 featured Tammie McMahon, Executive Director of the Ruth Project. This project serves local foster children and their families. Tammie started 10 years ago with a Bible study on the Book of Ruth, which supports efforts to help widows and orphans. Today she has built an impressive service to foster children which includes (in part) a 33-acre farm, a downtown boutique for foster families (at 19 Douglas Avenue), an animal barn, activity park, greenhouse – all part of a dream she sketched on a napkin when she stared (the napkin is still on display!) The mission: a vision is that all foster children will feel abundantly loved, deeply cared for, and experience true hope in Jesus. The program features practical provisions, ongoing support for each child and family, and community connections. and Ruth Project is essential to keep kids successful after they age out at the age of 18 years.

On March 25, Rebecca Millier, Museum Educator at the Elgin History Museum, spoke on the museum's education program for kids and youth. Each week the museum hosts visits from 2 schools, drawing from interactions with U-46, District 300, and other schools in the area. She and several volunteers help give the kids "lightbulb moments" in their minds to imagine older days in Elgin, including the watch factory (where men were paid more than women!), phones had dials, phone books, typewriters, etc. She featured a book first created by E.C. Alft entitied "Elgin - 100 Years of Aging." All are welcome to visit Elgin History Museum!
