Building a stronger animal services system means giving communities the resources and support they need to care for animals.

Today, Animal Protection New Mexico is releasing Animal Services in New Mexico: A Needs Assessment for the North Central Region (2026), the first assessment of its kind in New Mexico.

Based on 100+ interviews, Tribal engagement, site visits, and extensive research, the report examines animal shelters, animal control programs, equine programs, and animal-related disaster preparedness and response.

While the assessment focuses on north central New Mexico, its findings point to challenges facing communities across the state—and the need for a coordinated statewide approach.

Yesterday was another Mora transport day with 18 pets brought to our clinic. Altogether, we have served over 350 pets from Mora County. We have one more transport day scheduled for September 29 if anyone needs transportation.
