Canine & Equine Ranch, also known as The Ranch, is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was formed to offer sanctuary to neglected animals and provide educational experiences to the community. Our outreach programs offer educational experiences with sanctuary residents and trained therapy animals. We provide a volunteer program as well as autism support and homeschool sessions. Our goal is to teac

h compassionate handling and proactive training methods, to help prevent more animals from entering the rescue system. We want our community to be excited about animals! The Ranch has provided a home to many animals that have been rescued, adopted or donated. We specialize in canine and equine species but have open arms for many different types of creatures. Once they have been rehabilitated, they are able to interact with visitors for educational purposes. From community art classes to animal visits at the assisted living facility, we've done our job when we see the smiles!

Last Friday, we had the honor of attending an awesome western dance and party! Irish, Lucy, and Flash were greeted with big smiles and lots of petting! We hope everyone had a great time!

Did you know that rabbits have good associative and long-term memories? Yep, it’s true. Especially, for people they interact with regularly.

A rabbit can remember:

Your scent and voice — they can learn to recognize familiar people.

Your appearance and mannerisms — particularly when combined with other familiar cues.

Positive experiences — such as being fed, gently handled, or receiving treats.

Negative experiences — rabbits may remember people or situations that frightened or hurt them and become wary.

Routines — they can learn who feeds them, who lets them out, and what happens at certain times of day.

A rabbit that has bonded with someone may show recognition by running toward them, nudging them, circling their feet, relaxing around them, or seeking attention.

Interestingly, rabbits don’t necessarily remember people in exactly the same way humans do. Their recognition is likely heavily based on smell, sound, routine, and emotional associations.

Over summer, Gus started to drop weight alarmingly fast. While he is one of our senior horses, the drop in weight was too fast to be normal. I dewormed him and checked his mouth. I had separated him with free feeding of hay and pellet.

Still, no improvement and couldn’t figure out the cause. Thankfully, Dr. Amanda was able to properly secure his mouth open and get a clear look at everything. Poor Gus had a stick lodged at the very back of his upper jaw! To our relief, Gus is now devouring his pellet. Hopefully, he will gain back his weight quickly.

Gus is one of many seniors in our care. Over the next few months it is our goal to make sure everyone is up to date before winter. If you would like to help one of our animals please reach out to us, we would be so grateful!

Eli loves a hibiscus! 🌺 And he always welcome a pet!

This sweet boy is so confident and friendly. What a blessing to take in such a kind creature. Eli has been with us for eight or nine years now. Thank goodness for the person who knew he had no business roaming a hiking area!

I’ve been struggling with low back/hip pain for over a month. It finally came to a breaking point a few weeks ago. I couldn’t lift more than a flake of hay. No hinging at the hips, especially holding weight. Anyone who runs a ranch knows, aside from filling waters, you’re basically out of the game.

Thankfully, people stepped up to help. My husband, Dave, started feeding day and night. One of our board members, Marnie, dedicared her Thursdays to a deep clean and reset of the grounds. We even received a generous donation by Liz to hire help or at least take the stress off the finances for the feed bill. To all the friends and volunteers who have stopped by to assist, I’m truly grateful! And I’m sure the animals are too!

Lesson learned for doing too much! Take care of your body!
