"For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality." 1 Thessalonians 4:3

Sanctification is defined as the process of becoming holy. It is not the same as justification, which means we are held blameless in the eyes of God. Even though we are justified by God at the point of salvation, sanctification is a process that God will take us through the rest of our lives.

It is God's desire for us to grow and mature in our faith. That takes time. And every day is a battle between our sin nature and God's call to holiness. But like a parent nurtures a child, the Holy Spirit is always there to point out right and wrong and to help us become more like Jesus as we learn to trust in Him.

"As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." 1 Peter 1:14-16

"For indeed when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction; and so it came to pass, as you know." 1 Thessalonians 3:4

It's not "if", it's "when" affliction is going to come for those that are trying to live for the Lord. The hard truth of the gospel is even if we are obedient to God, there are still things in this world that are out of our control.

Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly under attack because of our faith. No matter how good things seem to be going, we're always one illness, one financial burden, or one broken relationship away from that faith being challenged. God's word helps us recognize those as spiritual battles, we just have to ask for His grace and try to glorify Him in the process.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:12

"for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake." 1 Thessalonians 1:5

The buzzword for people outside the church looking in is "hypocrite". The term is used to describe someone who proclaims to be a Christian but doesn't act like it. It's also a convenient excuse for those who don't know God to dismiss faith as being phony.

It's unfair for others to expect us to be perfect in our faith. But it is fair for them to expect us to believe in the word we preach. Our job is to lead people to Christ. We don't just tell them who He is and say "Good luck". We show them who He is by being genuine in our faith. That means standing on the principles we preach, and it means loving on the people we preach to.

"But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves" James 1:22

"Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity." Colossians 4:5

The popular misconception of too many members of the church is that we're not in ministry. The reason is that we don't understand how Jesus intended His church to function. We see the church as a place, and ministry as the job of the pastors and staff that run it. As a result, we fill the pews and bible study classes acting like spectators watching an event.

But the truth, according to God's word, is that we are all called to ministry. A non-believer doesn't have to go to church to hear the gospel. They should hear it from us - see it in the way we live. That is why we choose our words and actions carefully. We don't just GO to church, we ARE the church.

"But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;" 1 Peter 2:9

"See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." Colossians 2:8

Our walk with the Lord bears a lot of similarities to the multiple choice tests we took in school. We face tough decisions regarding our faith every day, and even the wrong options we're given can sound like they're right.

Just like every test question has only one correct answer, there is only one WAY when it comes to our faith. And that is to be obedient to God's word. Even a little deviation can lead to us making the wrong decisions regarding sin and our role as Christians. We should never believe or follow anyone's ideas that don't line up exactly with God's word, and that includes our own.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6
