"Then Abraham rose from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, "I am a stranger and a sojourner among you; give me a burial site among you that I may bury my dead out of my sight."" Genesis 23:3-4

Some passages of scripture are trivial. We may even wonder why they're in the Bible. But chapters on genealogy, the seemingly insignificant facts about the patriarchs, and other descriptive verses are part of the historical record. They help us piece together God's plan and how it has come to fruition.

It also gives us insight into the depth of their faith. It didn't begin and end with them. God's word was carried through the generations because they were diligent about making sure it was. They didn't just inwardly agree with the promises of God, they actively worked to help deliver them.

"By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God." Hebrews 11:9-10

"Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham! And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you." Genesis 22:1-2

How much do we trust the Lord? Most of us don't really know. That's because God has not yet chosen to test our faith the way He did with Abraham. But when He does, how will we respond?

Abraham saddled his donkey and immediately made preparations to follow God's instructions. In the same way, we have to move forward in our walk and take those leaps of faith regardless of who or what it may cost us. It is not to show God that He is Lord of our life, it's to show us.

"He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me." Matthew 10:37

“Then the LORD took note of Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him." Genesis 21:1-2

People today do not want to be confused with facts. Our culture is driven by emotion and fear rather than reality. Whether it's political, financial, or social commitments, we have ways of justifying it to ourselves and others without real evidence.

When it comes to Christianity, it seems both believers and non-believers are far more hesitant to make a commitment to the Lord unless they see evidence that God will deliver on His promises. But if we look at the record - the Bible - He never fails. So our hesitation to give our whole heart to the Lord is not due to a lack of evidence, it's due to a lack of faith.

"Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." John 20:27

"Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" Genesis 17:17

You have to wonder sometimes if God has a sense of humor. But we never see Him joke around when He has spoken to or through man. He's always serious about what He says He can or will do.

The problem with us sometimes is that we want to react to God like we would react to another person. We laugh at some of the things He asks us to do because there's no way He can be serious. But He is. He always is. The Lord does not get any glory when we do things that are possible by our own means, He is glorified when He accomplishes something through us that can't be explained otherwise.

"but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, " 1 Corinthians 1:27:28

"So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai." Genesis 16:2

Stick to the plan. So many Christians today are in a battle. We want to believe the promises of God and heed His warnings, but the temptations and arguments against doing so are hard to fend off. If we're not careful, a moment of weakness can have consequences for generations to come.

Abraham's obedience resulted in all God's people being blessed. His disobedience has caused conflict and turmoil for his descendants to this day. The only way we're going to avoid the pitfalls of sin and disobedience in our lives is to avoid anything that does not line up with God's word. There is always a choice. We just have to ask God for help to make the right one.

"But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith..." 1 Timothy 6:11-12
