Let’s Talk: Common Feelings & Emotions for Kids Ages 9–16

Girls and boys ages 9–16 experience rapid physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes that can impact mental health. Heightened emotions and mood swings are often a normal part of navigating these important developmental years.
Follow along this week as we highlight common emotions and behaviors—and the signs parents may need to pay closer attention to.

Let's talk: If you have a teen this age, does this sound familiar?

The Power of Gratitude for Brain Health
By Lisa Kadavvy, School Facilitator, Edmond Family Counseling
Gratitude isn’t just a feeling—it’s a practice that can reshape your brain.
Research shows that gratitude activates the brain’s reward and motivation centers, releasing dopamine and serotonin—chemicals that improve mood, increase motivation, and support emotional regulation.
Over time, gratitude strengthens neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex—the brain’s center for decision-making and emotional control. This “rewiring” helps reduce stress and build resilience.
Regular gratitude practice has also been linked to:
• Increased gray matter in areas related to memory and learning
• Lower levels of inflammation, a contributor to cognitive decline
• Protection of key brain regions involved in long-term functioning
Gratitude doesn’t just help you feel better—it supports long-term brain health. Stay tuned for tips on how you can use gratitude to better your mental health!
