Founded in Muskogee County by Black families determined to create opportunity on their own terms, Summit once thrived as a farming and railroad community. Some suggest the name Summit was selected as the town sits at the highest point on the railroad that sits between the Arkansas and North Canadian rivers. Like many historic all-Black towns, it was built on the principles of self-governance, hard work, and collective pride.

Today, Summit’s spirit lives on through residents and descendants who continue to honor its history—none more so than Wallace Owens, the town’s oldest living native. Wallace not only carries Summit’s story in his heart, but also shares it with the world through Owen’s Art Gallery in Guthrie, OK, where history, culture, and creativity meet.

Summit may be small, but its impact and its people are mighty.

Founded in 1850 by the Creek Nation, Tullahassee is the oldest surviving all-Black town in Oklahoma. In the late 1800s, the Creek Nation transferred ownership of the area to its Black Freedmen citizens—setting the stage for generations of Black excellence.

Home to the historic Flipper–Davis College, the only private institution for African Americans in the state. Rich with Native and African American ties, Tullahassee remains a vital thread in the fabric of Oklahoma’s cultural heritage.
