Happy Labor Day!!
Labor Day is about celebrating the hard work of the common People who sell their labor in exchange for money so that they can afford to pay for housing, food, healthcare, etc. This holiday is to celebrate YOU and all the work you do to contribute to yourselves, your families, and society.
The rights we have in the workplace today (that are less than 100 years old, mind you) we often take for granted. The 8 hour workday, the weekend, minimum wage, child labor laws, etc. These rights only came about because hard working People united in solidarity to stand against oppressive capitalists and demanded them.
In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act establishesld the first federal minimum wage at $0.25 per hour, a maximum 44-hour workweeks (later lowered to 40), and banned oppressive child labor.
In 1940, Congress officially amends the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), hardcoding the standard maximum workweek to 40 hours and effectively sealing the 8-hour workday nationwide.
In 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passes. Title VII outlaws workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, s*x, or national origin, bridging the civil rights and labor movements.
There are countless other examples to list of People coming together and demanding fair treatment under the law. Unfortunately, like many of our laws and regulations, these victories came about only after countless People gave their bodies, their time, and their lives for them.
Our labor laws are written in blood. It would be disrespectful and dishonorable to not take time to appreciate those in the past who organized in their own times so that we might have a better time of it today. It's also disrespectful and dishonorable to not do all in our power to further enshrine these rights and to do the work in our time to ensure that those who come after us will have it better than we did.
Solidarity Forever!
Workers of the World, Unite!
All the Power to All the People!
