Rare species spotted in Eastham! Recent heavy rain last Sunday brought out this Eastern Spadefoot Toad, which was observed on Nauset Road that night.

This species, rarely seen by Eastham residents, is descended from Southwest desert ancestors. It spends most of its time burrowed into sandy soils and breeds in spring in small, temporary wetlands.

Many of these wetlands have been filled in and the spadefoot is now listed as a Threatened species in Massachusetts. Road kill on rainy nights is also a threat to spadefoots and most other amphibians, so please slow down and keep an eye out for them.

Walk, run or ride the Eastham–Orleans Rail Trail and you will embark on a journey through some of Cape Cod’s special and protected natural landscapes!

Along the trail look for boundary markers of protected lands owned by the Eastham Conservation Foundation, Orenda Wildlife Land Trust and the Town of Eastham which collectively help preserve forests, wetlands, meadows, and wildlife habitat for generations to come thanks to your support!

Every mile is a reminder that recreation and preservation can go hand in hand—and that protecting these habitats keeps this treasured landscape healthy for people and wildlife alike. Thank you to ECF's ecologist Dr. Bob Cook for the nature tour!🌿
