He is currently employed full-time as an interpreter with the Bloomfield Hills School District and also works as a freelance interpreter in a variety of settings, including outdoor education, live events, and musical theater productions. William holds an EIPA Elementary score of 4.4, an EIPA Secondary score of 4.2, and a BEI Basic certification with a DeafBlind Endorsement. He graduated from the Interpreter Training Program at Lansing Community College and earned a Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language Interpreting from Siena Heights University. In addition to his educational and interpreting work, William has served as both a coordinator and interpreter for the International Climbers Festival in Wyoming, combining his professional expertise with his passion for increasing accessibility in outdoor spaces. He has also served on the board of the Michigan chapter for RID as Publications Manager and Member at Large since 2022.
Sign language interpreters often work in isolation, but are regularly confronted with ethical challenges that require on-the-spot decisions that directly impact stakeholders. MIRID’s Ethical Discussion Groups (EDGs) are intended to offer a confidential place for working interpreters as well as interpreters-in-training to case conference about the ethical conflicts that arise in the field of interpreting. The facilitator will provide a discussion framework to guide participants as they consider the application of the NAD/RID Code of Professional Conduct, as well as other relevant and applicable resources (legal mandates, additional codes of conduct, industry standard practice, workplace policies, etc.). Participants will benefit by having the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues about ethical challenges they face in their everyday work, and may develop new skills and comfort with engaging in professional-level dialogue amongst peers. Furthermore, participants may develop a broader fund of knowledge of the tools, resources, and stakeholder perspectives that influence the ethical decision making process. Workshops will be conducted in either ASL or English, depending on the communication preferences of attendees. Register at https://www.michiganrid.org/events
