Teacher Appreciation Week is a time to recognize the incredible educators who show up every day for Michigan’s students — not just to teach, but to inspire, support, and believe in them.

In classrooms across our state, MEA members are building futures, sparking curiosity, and creating opportunities that last a lifetime. The impact you make goes far beyond lessons and test scores — it lives in the confidence you build, the relationships you foster, and the doors you help open.

Thank you for your dedication, your professionalism, and your unwavering commitment to public education. We see you, we appreciate you, and we are proud to stand alongside you!

On this May Day, we recognize the power and progress of working people—past and present—who have fought to build a more just and equitable future for all.

This week in Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to connect with Becky Pringle and thank her for her extraordinary leadership.

Becky has been a fierce advocate for educators, students, and working families across the country, and her impact on our movement will be felt for years to come.

As we mark May Day, I’m grateful for leaders like Becky—and for every MEA member who continues to stand up, speak out, and move our profession forward.

This week has been a whirlwind. As I reflect on our Representative Assembly, I feel energized and inspired by our members and the work ahead. I remain committed to moving MEA forward with purpose, focus, and enthusiasm.

Last night, I had the chance to spend time with members at a West Michigan Whitecaps game alongside Secretary-Treasurer Aaron Eling. As we thank Vice President Smith for his service and welcome Bob Callender into the role, I’m grateful that Aaron will continue his leadership with our team.

Aaron’s impact has been invaluable. His experience, insight, and drive are already making a difference across our association.

Together, Aaron, Bob, and I are excited to build on the strong foundation we’ve established and continue expanding our vision for a stronger, more responsive association—one that serves our members, students, and communities well.

This weekend was a special moment for the Michigan Education Association as we honored Gretchen Whitmer with our very first Gretchen Whitmer Champion for Education Award.

Governor Whitmer has been a true friend to educators, students, and public schools—leading with heart, purpose, and a deep belief in the power of education to change lives. From historic investments to uplifting the voices of those in our classrooms, her commitment has made a real difference across Michigan.

We’re grateful for her partnership, her leadership, and the care she brings to this work every day. It felt only right to celebrate that impact in a way that will carry forward for years to come.

This weekend at our annual Representative Assembly, I was honored to be elected to serve another three-year term as MEA President, alongside Bob Callender of Warren EA as Vice President.

I am incredibly grateful for the trust and support of our members. It is a privilege to continue serving this organization, and I am proud of the work we have done together. I am hopeful about what lies ahead as we continue strengthening our union, supporting our members, and advocating for strong public schools for every student in Michigan.

I also want to thank Brett Smith for his many years of service and dedication to MEA. His leadership and commitment have helped move this organization forward in important ways. We wish him luck as he seeks the office of NEA Secretary-Treasurer.

Last night, I was honored to attend Governor Whitmer’s State of the State address, where education and literacy were front and center. The governor again called for bold action to improve reading outcomes for Michigan students — reinforcing that literacy is foundational to opportunity and success in every classroom.

I’m grateful for her continued support of strong, research-based literacy initiatives that help all learners thrive, and I want to give a special shout-out to Michelle Richard for her leadership and expertise in advancing this important work.

One of the highlights of the evening was meeting several incredible Michigan Education Association members who were invited in recognition of their outstanding literacy work in the classroom. Their commitment to students is truly inspiring!

Today at Waverly High School, I was proud to join Governor Gretchen Whitmer as she signed new bipartisan legislation that will require every Michigan school district to adopt a clear cell phone policy for students during instructional time starting in the 2026–27 school year.

I want to sincerely thank Sen. Dayna Polehanki and Rep. Mark Tisdel for sponsoring this legislation and sticking with it, and I appreciate lawmakers from both parties who worked to get it across the finish line. And thank you to the students, educators, and staff at Waverly for hosting us—and for showing what’s possible when we prioritize focus, connection, and learning.

Let’s keep moving forward together for Michigan’s kids!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Black History Month—a powerful milestone and an important moment for reflection and celebration.

For five decades, Black History Month has invited us to honor the achievements, leadership, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans who have shaped our nation, our communities, and our public schools. It is also a reminder of the work that remains to ensure equity, opportunity, and justice for all.

At the MEA, we are proud to stand alongside our Black members, students, and families—not only this month, but every day—as we continue the work of building inclusive schools and stronger communities for the future!

In challenging times across our nation, the MEA remains committed to supporting our families, students, communities, and members—working in partnership with the NEA and organizations across Michigan and the country.

We know many MEA members are worried about safety in our buildings and the fear and trauma immigration enforcement is creating for children and families, whether it’s in Minneapolis or here in Michigan. The Michigan Education Association believes that harm is being done to our children by aggressi...
