Breaking The Cycle

Breaking The Cycle Breaking the Cycle uses mountain biking to bring positive role models and activities into the lives of teens recovering from alcohol or substance abuse.

Sponsored by the Greater Hartford YMCA, Breaking the Cycle is a program that takes teenagers near Hartford, Connecticut, on rides on local mountain bike trails with experienced mountain bikers as leaders and mentors. Rides include complete instruction on riding a bike and mountain biking skills, starting with the basics and moving on to more advanced skills depending on the abilities and interest

s of the kids. Breaking the Cycle provides at no cost:
- Mountain bikes, helmets, gloves, and water bottles
- Clinics on bike safety, maintenance and repair
- Snacks and lunches for all participants
- Transportation to and from the trailhead

Teens who participate on a majority of the rides throughout the season will earn their own mountain bike by completing hands-on lessons in basic bike mechanics and bike safety, which also focus on personal responsibility, achievement and empowerment, through the Earn a Bike Program.
