Eve continues to impress all of us with how well she is doing in her training evaluation. She is a kind, easy mare who truly seems to appreciate having a job.

We are still working on building muscle and helping her become more relaxed when away from the herd, but Eve is happy on the trails and loves to really move out. She would be a wonderful partner for someone who enjoys covering some ground and exploring the trails. Eve is not spooky, though she does best trail riding with a companion horse.

Eve does have very flat feet and will require front shoes to help keep her comfortable.

Eve is a nine year old Standardbred mare standing 14.2 hands tall with a petite build. Because of her sensitivity when away from the herd and her forward nature on the trails, we feel she would be best suited for an intermediate to advanced rider. Due to her petite build and size, she would do best with a rider under 175 pounds.

Eve is almost ready for adoption! If you think you may be the right match, please visit our website to learn more about our adoption requirements and process, and to submit an adoption application.

We can’t wait to find this special girl the loving home she deserves. ❤️

Two days ago, Daisy and Midnight arrived at The Dorset Equine Rescue as owner surrenders. While both horses continue to settle in, Daisy remains in critical condition and is not yet out of the woods.

Today, our team gave Daisy a much-needed grooming. In addition to being severely underweight, her coat was heavily matted and she was suffering from an extensive lice infestation. We carefully clipped her coat to help remove both the mats and the lice, allowing us to better treat her skin and provide some much-needed relief.

Daisy still had a full winter coat that she had not shed on her own despite the recent heat, and clipping her also helped provide relief from the warm temperatures. Underneath the mats, we discovered multiple open sores on her skin, consistent with irritation from scratching and rubbing due to the lice infestation.

The extent of Daisy’s lice infestation is among the worst we have ever encountered.

Despite everything she has endured, Daisy remains incredibly gentle, kind, and trusting. Her sweet nature in the face of such hardship is truly remarkable.

Midnight is also settling in well and has proven to be just as kind and sweet.

Daisy continues on a carefully monitored refeeding program under veterinary guidance, and our team is monitoring her closely around the clock. The next several days and weeks remain critical.

Please keep the prayers coming for Daisy. She has a long road ahead, and we remain hopeful that with time, care, and support, she will continue to grow stronger each day.

Recently, we received an extraordinary gift from one of our kind supporters, Vicki.

Vicki made the trip to The Dorset Equine Rescue to personally deliver this beautiful horse weathervane, lovingly named Buttonwood after her barn, a place that held many treasured memories for her.

Among those memories was Jesse, her beloved buttermilk buckskin, a horse who clearly left an everlasting mark on her heart.

When Vicki entrusted Buttonwood to us, she shared that she would rather see it watching over rescue horses every day than tucked away where few could enjoy it. We were deeply touched by her generosity and by the story and love behind this special piece.

Today, Buttonwood has found its new home atop our newest barn, where he now stands watch over the rescue horses below. It feels especially fitting that a tribute so rich with memories and love will continue to bring joy while overlooking horses receiving a second chance.

Vicki, thank you for this beautiful gift and for the trust you placed in us. We will treasure Buttonwood always and think of the love and memories he represents each time we look up and see him watching over the farm. We hope Jesse’s memory lives on in every horse that finds safety, healing, and hope here. 💗

Please join us in welcoming our two newest rescues, Daisy and Midnight, who arrived at The Dorset Equine Rescue yesterday afternoon as owner surrenders.

While Midnight, a handsome gelding, arrived in much better condition and is settling in well, Daisy’s condition is heartbreaking.

When Daisy stepped off the trailer, it was immediately clear that she was in serious trouble. Emaciated and weak, she has a body condition score of just 1 and is suffering from one of the most severe lice infestations we have ever encountered.

Despite everything she has endured, Daisy remains gentle, kind, and trusting.

Our veterinarian came out today to evaluate both horses, and Daisy has already begun a carefully monitored refeeding program. At this stage, however, she is not out of the woods. We remain very concerned about her condition and will be closely monitoring her while providing the medical care, nutritional support, and rehabilitation she desperately needs.

The next several weeks will be critical.

Our immediate goal is to raise $4,500 to help cover:

🐴 Veterinary examinations, medications, and treatment

🐴 Specialized feed and nutritional support

🐴 Ongoing care and rehabilitation

🐴 Follow-up veterinary care as Daisy begins her recovery journey

Every horse deserves the chance to feel safe, healthy, and loved. Right now, Daisy is getting that chance—but she cannot do it alone.

Whether you can give $5, $25, $100, or simply share this post, your support will help provide Daisy and Midnight with the care they need and the future they deserve.

Please keep Daisy in your thoughts and prayers as she begins her long road to recovery. We will continue to share updates on her progress in the days and weeks ahead.

We are encouraged to see Vermont continuing to strengthen its animal welfare laws. Animal cruelty legislation passed by lawmakers this year officially became law after receiving Governor Phil Scott’s signature this week.

We were honored to be among the organizations that provided written testimony in support of this legislation, and we are grateful to the lawmakers, animal welfare advocates, law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, rescues, and state officials who worked to move these important protections forward. We are especially appreciative of the ongoing efforts of our Animal Welfare Director, Lisa Milot, and her work throughout Vermont to advance animal welfare.

One horse whose story highlights why these protections matter is Freya (formerly Panike), who is featured in the news segment linked below.

Freya was one of 74 Friesian horses involved in a large-scale animal welfare investigation that resulted in four separate seizures from a Friesian breeding operation. The Dorset Equine Rescue assisted law enforcement throughout those investigations and helped provide care and rehabilitation for many of the horses.

When Freya was rescued in July 2023, she was suffering from severe neglect, emaciation, and a skin infection. After months of rehabilitation, veterinary care, proper nutrition, and training, she made an incredible transformation. Last October, Freya was adopted into a loving forever home, where she continues to thrive.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of why strong animal cruelty laws matter and why rescues, law enforcement, veterinarians, and supporters must continue working together to protect animals in need.

Please take a moment to watch the news story below. We’ll share Freya’s before-and-after photos in the comments so you can see her remarkable transformation for yourself. ❤️🐴
