Richard Kelly, Esq. and the team at RC Kelly Law Associates have been working with school bus operators for over a decade. We truly admire each contractors' dedication to their passion, safe school transportation. We take pride in working with these community heroes and are humbled by the personal sacrifices they make to ensure each and every child arrives to and from school safely.

Each February we celebrate Love the Bus Month across the United States. We wanted to take a moment to thank these professionals and ask you to do the same! Share this post and thank the school bus professional in your community!

STOP FOR THE SCHOOL BUS!!!!

The fine for illegally passing a school bus is a maximum of $200. Repeat offenders may have their licenses suspended.

Teach young children to take 5 giant steps (10 ft.) in front of the bus and to wait for the driver's signal before crossing.

Approximately 400,000 Massachusetts students are transported by school buses annually. School buses are a relatively safe form of transportation and are associated with few injuries and deaths. The majority of school bus-related injuries are to pedestrians who are boarding/exiting a bus. They are hit by passing traffic or even by the bus driver, who cannot see them in the blind spots surrounding the bus. Children ages 4-7 are at highest risk of injury.

Getting On and Off the Bus
• Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.
• Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus.
• If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited to see you after school that they dash across the street and forget the safety rules.

Tip #4 Remember things like the “Danger Zone” can help any preventable injuries.

Students are most at risk of injury when entering or exiting the school bus - riders should follow these important tips to stay safe in the Danger Zone:

- If you can touch the bus, you are too close
- When exiting, use 10 giant steps to take you out of the “danger zone”
- Be sure that you can see the driver and that the driver can see you at all times
- If you drop anything in the “danger zone” NEVER stop to pick it up
