L'Arche North Carolina

L'Arche North Carolina An inclusive community for adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.

L'Arche (French for 'The Ark') makes explicit the dignity of every human being by building inclusive communities of faith and friendship where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together. Community members are transformed through relationships of mutuality, respect and companionship as they live, work, pray and play together. People with intellectual disabilities are at t

he heart of L'Arche. They are not clients, patients or recipients of services, but rather they are friends, teachers and companions. People without intellectual disabilities grow through their encounters in L'Arche. Through daily acts of care, trust and friendship, they develop into ambassadors of compassion and leaders of social change and the common good. L'Arche North Carolina exists to envision and establish a l'Arche community in our state, with a special focus on the Triangle area. We seek to build relationships with those in our community who desire alternative housing for adults with intellectual disabilities, who recognize the gifts of all people, particularly those on the margins of society and who want to journey with us as we journey towards becoming a l'Arche.

Happy Birthday to our friend, Sandy!!

Sandy has been a fierce advocate and supporter of more inclusive housing! She has helped L’Arche NC raise $30,000 to purchase the Friendship Houses and create more affordable and inclusive housing for our friends with IDD.
Her goal it to raise $100,000!! Donate today in honor of her birthday!
Visit: https://givebutter.com/LNCforward/sandydemeree

Our hope is to purchase the Friendship Houses in August 2026, renovate them to be warmer, safer, and more accessible— and invite 8 adults with IDD to move in and share life together with students and live-in Assistants in 2027.

Every donation, whether it’s $2, $20, $2,000 or $200,000 moves us closer to our goal!!

At L’Arche NC, we’re grateful for the gifts every generation brings to our community. 🧡

Some of us explain inclusion with carefully crafted language.
Some of us explain it with blurry selfies, karaoke laughs, and chaotic group photos.

And honestly? We need all of it.

Different generations bring different wisdom, humor, energy, creativity, and ways of building belonging. Together, it creates a community where everyone has something to offer and everyone has something to receive.

Here’s to millennials, Gen Z, Boomers, Gen Alpha, and everyone in between helping build a more inclusive world together. ♿️✨

A huge CONGRATS to Dr. Allie Lerner on your graduation from the program!

Allie has been sharing life at L’Arche as a Live-Out Assistant since January 2025. This past semester, Allie served at L’Arche for her Occupational Therapy capstone project. She focused on creating an inclusive co-designed household responsibility system for our home that can be replicated in future L’Arche homes. This included listening to our Core Members and team on how we can agree on what “clean” means and the responsibilities to maintain a safe and welcoming home.

Have you ever thought about your definition of clean? We all have different definitions— and, in a home where we share life together, we must work together from and within our various gifts in agreement and commitment, to our L’Arche home.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Allie Lerner! 👩🏻‍🎓🎉🙌

Let’s move toward June—together.

Join our Executive Director on Mondays (or whichever Mondays work for you between now and June 3) to walk, run, or roll as we prepare for our June 13 event. This is about showing up, moving together, and building momentum—at your own pace.

We’ll gather downtown at the Miracle League each week, starting today. Whether you come once or every Monday, you belong with us.

Send us a DM if you plan to join so we can look out for you!

Yesterday at the IDD Legislative Caucus pre-gathering, our L’Arche NC Jam Together group sang Lean on Me—and the whole room joined in.

A simple moment, but a powerful reminder: community is at the heart of everything. đź’›

April has already been full in all the best ways—friendship, laughter, and moments that remind us what community really looks like. 💛

We were excited to learn about a police car up close—thank you, Officer Mursten, for the tour! 🚓
We’ve loved gathering around the table to share meals that nourish both body and belonging,
and we’re so grateful for volunteers who jumped in to help with yardwork (power tools and all!).

It was meaningful to join friends at Duke Divinity School for Stations of the Cross.

We’ve been soaking up this beautiful (and very warm!) spring weather together outdoors.

And to top it all off… we even got to meet the Savannah Bananas ⚾️

It’s been a month of connection, joy, and everyday moments that matter. 💛

We hope you’ll join us next Thursday at the Bulla Center as we Craft Together in Community.

Team building — can you draw a house without touching the pen?

On our L’Arche team, sometimes you need to pull a little more, sometimes you are invited to allow someone else to lead. We all have something to learn and coming we can teach. When we work as a team and communicate, a house can become a community.

Have you ever drawn an image without touching the pen or marker? How did it go? Did someone help you?
