Jubilee Home

Jubilee Home Jubilee Home provides supportive housing for justice-involved men in Durham, North Carolina

So what the heck is a "faith-based non-profit transitional home?" A transitional home is a home designed to function as a secure and stable environment where someone can live for a set amount of time as they move from the hyper-structure of incarceration to the non-structured living of independence. Transitional homes function in the in-between, as an individual moves from being 'free from prison

' to actually able to live independently, or freely! Jubilee Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, meaning it receives tax-exempt status from the IRS, and donors to JH receive tax receipts for any giving to the organization. It also means, that by law, any revenues JH may receive above the needed budget (unlikely) must be put back into the organization in some form, or donated elsewhere, and not paid out to board members, etc. Jubilee Home is a faith-based organization stemming from the experiences and work of a student while at Duke Divinity School. There is no faith requirement for residents of JH, but the home has been designed and conceived as a labor of love through thoughtful theological consideration for what it means to live in a community that primarily promotes peace and life!

This reflection, shared during our team meeting yesterday, captures the heart of Second Chance Month. At Jubilee Home, second chances aren’t just about starting over, they’re about building forward with intention, dignity, and support.

Every day, we walk alongside individuals returning home from incarceration as they redefine what’s possible for their lives.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight but choosing to try again, and to do it differently, is where transformation begins.

If you’ve been following along as we prepare for Better Together, you may already know that Jubilee Home alumni and published authors Glen “Ed” Chapman and Larry Wollins will be on-site selling and signing their books at the event.

Get to Know Larry
📚 Favorite book: Masters of the Game by Sidney Sheldon
🧠 Writer’s block remedy: Meditation

Get to Know Ed
📚 Favorite book: Familiar Quotes and Quotations by David Bartlett
🥪 Writing fuel: A bologna and cheese sandwich with Duke’s Mayo and hogshead cheese
✍️ His "why": I wrote my book to share my experience and educate people about how common, and how serious, it is when people are torn from their families. Your life is never the same again.
💭 Biggest challenges when writing: Reliving the loss of the most important people in my life, losing my freedom, and knowing people were willing to let me be put to death for something I had nothing to do with.

Both books are linked below. If you can’t attend the event, you can still order a copy online. And if you are joining us but can’t wait to start reading, consider ordering ahead and bringing your copy to be signed that evening.

A little moment of levity to share from last week:

On Friday, we got a text that perfectly captures what it means to be a good neighbor. A group of staff and volunteers from Keep Durham Beautiful were gearing up for a tree planting at Hillside Park when they realized the park bathrooms were locked. Cue the panic text from one of the members of the group to our Executive Director: “We’re planting trees this morning… any chance I could use Jubilee Home’s bathroom?”

The answer, of course, was an immediate and enthusiastic yes. Because sometimes being a good neighbor isn’t about big gestures, it’s about open doors, shared space, and making sure someone can get back to planting trees without stress. 🌳🚻😅🏠

As we ready ourselves for this year’s Better Together storytelling event, we keep returning to the energy of last year and reflect on the deep sense of connection that filled the room.

Our Director of Wellness Initiatives, and returning emcee (yay!), Anna Banke, shares her thoughts below:

“Last year's Better Together storytelling event was such a gift to be a part of. To bear witness to someone's bravery, creativity, vulnerability, and transformation through story is one of the most sacred and human things we can do. I'm so glad all those who attended got a chance to know some of the beautiful folks that make up our Jubilee Home community.”

We can’t wait to gather again at the Carolina Theatre on March 10 at 7:00 PM for another evening of storytelling and shared humanity.

🎟️ Tickets go on sale starting tomorrow (!!!) we’ll post the link as soon as it’s live. If you cannot wait til then, feel free to visit the The Carolina Theatre of Durham box office today!

We hope you’ll join us. 💛

To those who are newer to Jubilee Home, welcome! 💛

We are a place where people coming home from incarceration find support, belonging, and dignity as they build strong, independent lives.

Jubilee Home offers quality, low-barrier supportive housing and wrap-around services, from mental health care, connection to social services to job support, because everyone deserves a chance to thrive, not just survive 🏠✨

As we look ahead to 2026, there’s a lot to be excited about:

🌱 Growing our team to better support our expanding community
👩‍🦰 Tailored, healing-centered services for the women of our newly opened women’s transitional home
🏡 A new community space where neighbors can connect, learn, and grow together
💐 Jubilee Flowers, our first social enterprise, truly blooming with our first full-time staff member to be hired this year

Follow along and help us celebrate the strength, resilience, and hope found in every step forward. 💛

As we pause to reflect on 2025, we’re holding a lot of gratitude 💛 for the growth of Jubilee Home and for all those who helped make it possible 🌱

This year, we expanded our staff to support the opening of our first-ever women’s home and to jumpstart our first social enterprise, Jubilee Flowers.

We’re so thankful for the people, patience, and partnerships that made this season of growth possible.
