Do pets improve quality of life for people facing financial hardship? The answer, it turns out, depends on how you ask. 🐾

A new mixed-methods study surveyed 282 residents of income-restricted public housing (many older adults or living with a disability) and ran parallel focus groups. The two methods told different stories. On standardized scales, there was no significant difference in quality of life or loneliness between residents with pets and without — and pet owners actually reported more days of poor mental health, even after adjusting for demographics.

But in focus groups, residents described their pets in profound terms: as family, as a reason to get out of bed, as "the only other human I have around." Nearly 9 in 10 pet owners said their pet made them feel less lonely.

The researchers suggest the disconnect isn't that pets don't help — it's that standardized scales may not capture pet-specific benefits, and that pets can't fully offset larger structural pressures like poverty or limited healthcare access. Notably, many residents made real trade-offs to care for their pets: 45% went without personal necessities, and over a third had gone without food themselves to feed their pet.

The takeaway for practitioners? Pet support is human support — and closing gaps in affordable veterinary care may do as much for people's wellbeing as it does for their pets'.

🐾 PET EDUCATION: WHY MICROCHIPPING MATTERS! 🐾

Did you know a microchip can be one of the best ways to help a lost pet get back home? ❤️

A microchip is a tiny form of permanent identification placed just under your pet’s skin. If your pet is ever lost and brought to a shelter, animal control, or veterinary clinic, they can scan the chip and use the registered information to contact you.

💡 A few important things to know:
🐾 Microchips do not track your pet like a GPS.
🐾 They provide permanent identification that can’t fall off like a collar or tag.
🐾 Always register your pet’s microchip and keep your contact information updated.
🐾 Even indoor-only pets should be microchipped — accidents happen!

Much needed in NH!

🐾❤️ BIG THINGS ARE COMING TO NEW HAMPSHIRE! ❤️🐾

A few months ago, we shared some exciting news — AWARE NH is opening New Hampshire’s first nonprofit affordable pet urgent care center, along with compassionate humane euthanasia services, in Manchester in January 2027!

There is a lot happening behind the scenes, and as we continue working to bring this new center to life, we wanted to share a little more about what we’ll be offering and why this is so important to us.

We know how stressful it can be when your pet is sick or something just isn’t right — especially when you need care quickly and affordable options are limited. New Hampshire needs more affordable veterinary care options, and we are incredibly excited to help meet that need.

WHAT WE’LL OFFER:
🐾 Affordable urgent veterinary care for non life threatening illnesses and concerns
❤️ Compassionate, affordable end of life care for sick and elderly pets
🙌 OPEN TO EVERYONE

🚨 PLEASE NOTE: We will be an urgent care center, not an emergency hospital. We’ll treat pets who need prompt veterinary attention but are not experiencing a life threatening emergency. Pets experiencing life threatening emergencies will need to be seen at a full service veterinary emergency hospital.

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest decisions a family can face. We want to make sure families have access to a peaceful, compassionate, and affordable option when that time comes — with every pet treated with the dignity, kindness, and love they deserve.

We make this promise: AWARE NH will never profit from euthanizing an animal. Our pricing for end of life care will be based only on covering the costs necessary to provide the service. We simply do not believe that saying goodbye to a beloved pet should ever be a source of profit.

And just as importantly, we will NOT euthanize healthy animals. Our end of life services will be for pets who are elderly, seriously ill, suffering, or experiencing a significant decline in their quality of life.

For us, this service is about one thing: providing compassion, dignity, and kindness to pets and the people who love them when they need it most. ❤️🐾
