🐾 Plan for Their Tomorrow, Today 🐾

As German Shepherd lovers, we know how deeply loyal, intelligent, and bonded these dogs are to their human families. Because they love so intensely, they are also incredibly vulnerable to major life upheavals.

Every year, rescues receive heartbreaking calls because an owner has unexpectedly passed away, suffered a severe medical crisis, or faced a sudden financial or housing hardship. In the worst moments, many families assume a relative or friend will step up to care for their GSD—but without a concrete, legally backed plan, that doesn't always happen.

Because German Shepherds are large, high-energy working dogs that require dedicated training and space, finding them a new home in an emergency can be incredibly difficult. The stress of a sudden change can cause immense grief and anxiety for them.

Please take these 4 steps today to secure your dog’s future:
1. Designate Guardians: Talk explicitly with two trusted people who are truly willing and capable of handling a German Shepherd. Do not just assume they will take them.
2. Put it in Writing: Include your pet in your legal will or look into creating a pet trust. Outline exactly who will take custody.
3. Set Aside an Emergency Fund: Consider leaving dedicated financial provisions in your will specifically for your dog’s lifetime medical care and food.
4. Create a "Care Blueprint": Keep a document handy detailing your dog's daily routine, medical history, favorite foods, behavioral quirks, and vet contact info.

Loving a German Shepherd means protecting them even when you can no longer be there to do it yourself. Please take a few moments this week to secure their safety net. They depend entirely on you. ❤️

Okay, there's no need to "pass the Grey Poupon". What we mean here is that Ricky has a refined taste in companions. He likes them to be dogs. This little guy is what you'd call a dog's dog. He is learning to trust people, but his favorite activities are cavorting with other canines and taking scenic walks. Put a leash on Ricky and he's ready to go! Can you just imagine the slow and steady bond this pup will build with his new human?

Sending our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Ace (GSRA Class of 2016). We are keeping his family in our thoughts as they remember their cherished boy. They share:

"My husband and I adopted our dog Ace (formerly Bam Bam/Avery) over ten years ago from GSRA back in May of 2016. May 28th, to be exact.

I regretfully wanted to let you all know that just shy of his 12th birthday, which would have been on the 23rd of this month, Ace crossed the rainbow bridge due to complications from a sudden seizure event. To say we are utterly devastated would be the greatest understatement.

Ace was the most incredible boy, who we loved so, so dearly. Though we are grieving such a significant loss, we are still very thankful to GSRA for bringing us together.

Because of GSRA, we walked through these past ten years with a best friend that would rival the storybooks. A dog who was loyal, genuine, steadfast, protective, spirited and gentle. An integral part of our every day.

Ace lived an incredible life, and we are trying to find peace and rest in that. In his decade with us he lived in 4 states, 6 different cities, drove cross country and back more than once, hiked trails, played on sandy beaches, and just lived life well. He was apart of us, apart of our family, and even in his absence that will never change.

I’ve attached some photos of him through the years, in the event you all wanted to see what your selfless service of helping rescue dogs produced.

You may notice a common dog in some, which is his “brother” Koda. When we adopted Ace originally, we had my amazing rescue Chino. Chino helped Ace learn to trust people again, and we truly credit him so much for helping Ace through his transitional period from a shelter to a home. Unfortunately, a little over a year after we rescued Ace, Chino crossed the rainbow bridge due to an aggressive inoperable liver cancer. Ace was my rock during that time, I owe him so much for keeping me afloat when he himself was also struggling.

Later, through a series of circumstances, we came to adopt Koda, Ace’s next best friend. As you will see, their bond was and is so special. It’s something we’ll never be able to replicate a once in a lifetime friendship. We always talked about how fortunate we were to have two boys that bonded so deeply so quickly. Ace’s absence has been very hard on him also, and we are doing everything we can to support him.

Ultimately, this message was meant to extend our heartfelt thanks. For your sacrifice, your care, and your hearts of service to these animals and their families.

Because of you all, I was blessed with one of the greatest loves I’ve ever known. It was our greatest honor and such a privilege to give Ace a home to spend the rest of his life in. We will miss him for the entirety of ours."

✨NEW PACK MEMBER!✨

If you know anything about Sophia Petrillo, you know she was the one who said exactly what she was thinking, whether you were ready for it or not. Sharp, sassy, and full of surprises, Sophia kept everyone on their toes. Well, this Sophia has that same spark.

Sophia is one of four 5-month-old pups GSRA is calling the Golden Girls, and just like the show, these girls have personality to spare. When they first arrived at the shelter, Sophia and her sisters were shy and reserved, unsure of the world around them. But foster care changed everything, and it did not take long for Sophia to show everyone who she really is.

Picture it. A foster home. A pup who just weeks ago barely made a peep. Now she runs the place. Sophia may have been quiet at first, but once she found her confidence, she found it all the way. She is bold, she is spirited, and she has a way about her that makes you laugh and fall in love at the same time.

ℹ NOTE: GSRA adopts in NC, SC, & VA. GSRA doesn't adopt dogs under 1 year old to families with children under 8. The GSRA team works hard to match the right dog with the perfect family which means that sometimes our ‘Coming Soon’ dogs may already be paired with an approved adopter before they officially become available for adoption.
