Annie's Orphans - Durango, CO Durango Colorado's only no-kill dog shelter. 🐶
Providing a safe haven for dogs until their forever homes can be found. 💜🐾

We began our work in 1985 as a home for retired sled dogs, but quickly turned into a full-fledged, all-breed rescue incorporated as a not-for profit foundation in 1997. We have a maximum capacity of approximately 70 dogs, but try to keep our numbers under 50 in winter so that we can give all our residents the care and attention they each deserve. We are a safe haven for the abandoned, neglected an

d abused dog population from throughout the greater Four Corners area. Our mission is to offer these dogs and those labeled as “difficult-to-adopt” by typical shelters, a refuge were they can live safely, comfortably, happily, and healthily until each can find his/her special person and forever home. Since opening our doors, we’ve found homes for approximately 2,000 dogs. Durango is a very dog friendly community. Someone once said “it’s not IF you have a dog in Durango, it’s how many dogs you have”. In caring for, readying for adoption and adopting out dogs, we believe we are doing a great service to the Durango community - human and canine alike. We also help reduce pet overpopulation by spaying, neutering and providing medical care for all dogs prior to placement in their new homes.

Prince is only 3 years old and he is one special little guy.

Prince has some trauma in his past, but with me, he is absolutely perfect. He is playful, sweet, affectionate and just an all around little ham. He would love nothing more than a lap to curl up in and a person to share adventures with.

He can be protective, especially around strangers, and he takes a little longer to warm up to men. Once he trusts you, though, you will see what a wonderful boy he truly is.

Prince does well with other dogs as long as they respect his boundaries. He actually seems to enjoy the company of bigger dogs when they are gentle and understand that Prince is a Prince. He is also fine with cats.

Because of his past and his boundaries, Prince needs a home without small children or children who do not understand how to respect a dog's space. He also has a little bit of a pistol streak. If he is frightened or does not want something done to him, he will let you know the only way a dog knows how. For that reason, he needs someone who will listen to his signals, respect his boundaries and give him the time he needs to feel safe.

Prince isn't looking for a perfect person. He is looking for someone who will understand him, respect him and love him for exactly who he is. And in return, you will get one playful, funny, loyal and incredibly lovable little companion.

Well, the dogs were upset about something tonight so I went out about 1am to see what was going on and this is what I heard. There were two of their cousins in close proximity to the kennels. Sounded like they were making plans to visit. Darn relatives showing up in the middle of the night.🙄I had already locked the puppies in the infirmary because of an owl that was hunting close, very close, to the kennels.

I just wanted to remind people if they have small dogs please don’t let them out at night alone. It’s so dangerous for the little ones. And if the coyotes are in a pack it can be dangerous for most all pets. But please don’t kill them. They’re very important to our environment. And besides that they’re just looking to survive, just like the rest of us.

This is just an audio clip so you won’t see much. It was really dark!!😳Just listen. It’s kind of beautiful listening to them communicate with each other. Which is a talent most humans, me especially, do not possess.
