The Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports recently of a phone/text scams involving thieves pretending to be Sheriff’s Office/law enforcement/jail officials asking for money, often via Bitcoin or some other cryptocurrency.

Criminals are falsely identifying themselves as real law enforcement officers and making false claims to potential victims about missing jury duty or some other lie about a fake (or even real) criminal case to extort money.

Often these scams involve the use of fake court documents/notifications regarding a false traffic/criminal infraction. Some of the scams targets those already facing criminal charges.

If someone contacts you asking for money, purporting to be from a law enforcement agency, any government organization or utility company, a bank, a credit card company, and so forth — hang up and contact the organization yourself.

A sure sign of a scam is anyone asking for payment for anything via gift cards or Bitcoin.

If you receive a distressing message from a family member/friend needing money immediately, always contact that family member/friend before sending money. If possible, save the text, email, or any other information and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly via www.keysso.net/locations

For the sixth consecutive year, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved Key West International Airport’s sponsorship of five Independence Day fireworks displays throughout the Florida Keys. Funds come from passenger user fees explicitly earmarked for promotional activities.

“Independence Day in the Florida Keys is more than fireworks; it’s a celebration of community, patriotism, and the traditions that bring generations of families together, especially this year, for America’s semi-quincentennial,” said Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln. “We appreciate the continued partnership of Key West International Airport, the municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and volunteers who help make these celebrations possible across the Florida Keys each year.”

“From Key Largo to Key West, these celebrations bring our communities together and showcase the unique spirit of the Florida Keys,” said Richard Strickland, airport Executive Director. “The airport is proud to support these longstanding traditions and the volunteers and organizations who work hard each year to create safe, memorable Independence Day celebrations for residents and visitors.”

County airport-sponsored Independence Day event plans include (subject to change):

Dear FKEC Member,

Over the coming weeks, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative will be conducting inspections of its underground distribution system. As part of this effort, you may see OSMOSE—a third-party contractor working with Florida Keys Electric Cooperative—performing the Public Service Commission (PSC) required three-year inspections of underground distribution equipment. The overall survey process is expected to take approximately 8 to 12 weeks.

All OSMOSE and FKEC personnel working in your area will be in clearly marked vehicles and carry valid FKEC identification.
The inspections will include visual, photographic, and thermal assessments to evaluate equipment condition and identify maintenance needs. Equipment labeling will also be reviewed and updated, as necessary. The inspection will cover, but is not limited to, the following:
• Pad-mounted transformers
• Switchgear
• Underground connection points

This work supports FKEC’s ongoing commitment to providing reliable electric service through proactive maintenance, helping maintain a 99.99% reliability standard. We appreciate your cooperation throughout this project.

If you have any questions, please contact Member Services at 305-852-2431.
