Translocation, a type of Down syndrome that accounts for 3 to 4% of all cases, is the only type known to have a hereditary component. About one-third of those cases, or about 1% of all cases of Down syndrome, are inherited.

For most families, Down syndrome happens by chance. 💛💙

The preferred spelling is "Down syndrome," not "Down's syndrome." The condition is named for John Langdon Down, the English physician who described it in 1866. He didn't have it himself, so there's no possessive.

"Intellectual disability" or "cognitive disability" has replaced older, outdated terms. NDSS strongly condemns the use of the r-word in any context, because it's hurtful, even when it's used casually.

All people with Down syndrome have some cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate. It doesn't reflect the many strengths and talents each person has.

People with Down syndrome go to school, work, make decisions about their own lives, build meaningful relationships, vote, and contribute to their communities in so many wonderful ways.

Fact #8 of 31: Living longer, but not equally 📈

Life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has risen dramatically, from 25 years in 1983 to about 60 today. That's something to celebrate! But McGlinchey et al. (2023) found significant racial disparities in life expectancy. Black individuals with Down syndrome face compounded inequities related to both race and intellectual disability.

Everyone deserves equal access to quality health care and support at every stage of life. That's why advocacy matters. 💛💙
