This is an incredibly heartbreaking situation for so many Americans. And honestly, I don’t care what it takes or what platform it comes from, I want to see MORE being done for mental health.
I lost my daughter when she was only 20 years old. I know firsthand what it means to become part of a club no parent ever wants to belong to. And there are far too many parents carrying this same unimaginable grief.
When we hear about a child as young as 13 dying by su***de, it should stop us in our tracks. It should break our hearts. And it should make us ask ourselves: What more can we do?
There are so many young people and adults across this country who are struggling silently. It doesn’t matter what political party you belong to, what platform you have, what organization you represent, or what your background is. If you have the ability to do something that could help someone struggling with their mental health, PLEASE do it.
We need to make mental health a priority.
We need to make conversations about mental health easier—not harder. We need people to feel safe saying, “I’m not okay.” We need families to know where to turn. We need young people to know that asking for help isn’t weakness.
And we need to stop treating brain health like it is somehow different from every other part of our health.
We talk about heart health.
We talk about kidney health.
We talk about liver health.
We talk about diabetes, cancer, and countless other medical conditions.
The brain is an organ, too.
Sometimes that organ isn’t as healthy as the others, and that doesn’t make someone weak, broken, or less worthy of help. It means they need care.
So whatever it takes—more resources, more conversations, better access to care, more education, more understanding, more compassion—let’s do it.
Because this is unacceptable.
No parent should have to bury their child. No child should feel so alone that they believe death is their only option.
We can do better.
We HAVE to do better.
Be kinder than necessary. Check on your people. Listen without judgment. Make the conversation easier.
Because every life matters. 💜🩵💜🩵
