Stay cool and safe during the heat this week! Check out these local cooling locations and share with anyone who may need a place to escape the heat!

Due to predicted extreme heat, the City of Dubuque is activating its cooling centers on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and Thursday, Sept. 3. During this time, temperatures are forecast to be in the 90s with high humidity, which are expected to combine to produce heat index readings near or over 100.

The City of Dubuque is advising residents to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illness. Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, the people at greatest risk include:
- People aged 65 or older
- Infants and young children
- Overweight individuals
- People who are performing manual labor or exercising outdoors
- People who have chronic health conditions, especially heart disease or high blood pressure, or those who take certain medications, such as those for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation

To protect your health when temperatures and humidity are high, remember to keep cool and use common sense. The following tips are important:
- Use a buddy system: Check on your neighbors, friends, and relatives. Watch others for heat-induced illness as some people may not realize they are suffering heat-related illnesses and can become confused or lose consciousness.
- NEVER leave people or pets alone in a closed car/automobile.
Increase fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. The best way to tell you are well hydrated is if your urine is light yellow. If it gets dark, rehydrate by drinking water immediately.
- If experiencing excessive sweating, especially over several hours, replace salt and minerals by eating foods like bananas and salty crackers, or drink rehydrating beverages that contain salts, such as sports drinks and special rehydration fluids.
- Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and wear sunscreen.
- Wear hats that shade your face, such as sun hats, visors, etc.
- Keep in the shade or air-conditioned areas as much as possible.
- Work slowly if you are not used to working or exercising in heat and humidity. Stop immediately if you get dizzy, nauseated, or feel weak. Go into an air-conditioned space and drink cool liquids.
- Check on outdoor pets to make sure they have plenty of water and do not leave unattended pets in vehicles.

Big "Thank You!" to Fountain Of Youth Program for their donation of 30 personal care packages for us to distribute during PIT Count this week.

Point in Time (PIT) Count is a bi-annual count of people who are living unsheltered in our community. It gives us a better picture of homelessness in our area so we can connect people with resources and advocate for the support our community needs.

We're grateful to have community partners who help us make these interactions a little more meaningful.

As Iowa welcomes thousands of cyclists for RAGBRAI, drivers are reminded to stay alert and share the road safely.

While RAGBRAI brings increased bicycle traffic for one week each year, bicycles are a year-round form of low-cost transportation for many members of our community. ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ง ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ง ๐›๐ข๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ to travel to work, food pantries, shelters, medical appointments, and other essential services. A little awareness and courtesy go a long way in keeping everyone safe.

Let's make Iowa's roads welcoming for RAGBRAI riders and for the community members who depend on bicycles every day. ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ
