As the school year winds down, we're thinking about one of the most important parts of any student's experience β€” feeling like they truly belong.

Not just showing up to school. But feeling seen. Feeling welcomed. Feeling like there are people in that building who are genuinely glad you're there.

For younger students, that might look like a friend who saves them a seat at lunch or a teacher who greets them by name every morning. For older students, it might be the group of people who just get them β€” or the adult at school who never stopped checking in.

And for the teachers and staff reading this β€” never underestimate the role you play in making a student feel like they belong. Sometimes you are the reason a student shows up.

At SSMV, building those connections is at the heart of everything our team does. Our Youth Case Managers work every day to make sure students across the Mohawk Valley have at least one trusted person in their corner β€” because belonging isn't a luxury. It's a necessity. πŸ’™

To every student finishing out this school year β€” we hope you felt it. And if you didn't, we want you to know: you belong here. Always. 🌱

Did you know the New York State Education Department has a new vision for what every high school graduate should know and be able to do?

It's called the Portrait of a Graduate β€” and ULI builds every single one of its six attributes. This summer, Utica teens can spend 8 days alongside police officers, firefighters, judges, and emergency responders β€” developing real leadership skills while exploring careers that make a difference.

The 15th Annual Urban Leadership Institute: First Responder Academy is free, open to incoming 9th–12th graders (and 2026 graduates), and applications are open now.

Did you know today is Say Something Nice Day? We can't think of a better way to kick off a new month.

Words matter β€” especially to young people. A simple compliment, a word of encouragement, or just telling someone you notice them can make a bigger difference than you'll ever know.

So today we're asking β€” who in your life deserves to hear something kind?

A student who worked hard this year.
A teacher who showed up every single day.
A neighbor who always checks in.
A kid who just needs to hear that they're doing okay.

At SSMV, kind words are part of how we show up for students every single day. Here's to a June full of them. πŸ’™

Youth Case Manager Tori Jones has been creating meaningful bulletin boards with students at Frankfort-Schuyler School each monthβ€”and the students are loving it! What started as a creative project has grown into a "Bulletin Board Adventure," with more students eager to participate and share their voices.

This May, the message is that Mental Health Awareness matters. Thank you, Tori, for giving our students a platform to express themselves and spread positivity throughout their school! πŸŒŸβ˜•

Students, we know that this time of year can feel heavy. With testing, grades and figuring out what comes next, it's easy to focus on everything you think you're not doing well enough.

But what we know to be true is that you are more capable than you give yourself credit for.

Stop to think about the challenges you pushed through this year, the hard days you showed up and the times you tried again even when it was hard.

At SSMV, we see what our students are made of every single day and it is something worth celebrating.
