We’re excited to welcome Kate Nisbet and Kelly Monroe to the stage at this year’s Funkraiser!

Both katemnisbet and khwamonroe know firsthand the challenges a cancer diagnosis can bring to a family. During their own cancer journeys, their kids received support through unchealthrex’s KidsCAN! program. Now, they’re sharing their stories to highlight the impact of that support and the importance of ensuring no one faces cancer alone.

When one person faces cancer, the impact reaches far beyond one diagnosis.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Holt Brothers Foundation and the 1 of Us Foundation are coming together to recognize the importance of support — for individuals facing cancer, for the children and families walking alongside them, and for the communities that surround them.

Our missions may look different, but we share a belief that no one should have to navigate cancer alone.

This October, we encourage you to turn awareness into action. Learn about the resources available in your community, share them with someone who may need support, and uplift the organizations working every day to ease the burdens cancer can bring.

Our Gameday Coordinators and Volunteers are an essential part of the Holt Brothers Foundation, giving their time to help make our events possible and support families impacted by cancer.

mlwilkin shared why volunteering with HBF means so much to her: “Volunteering with HBF is super important to me on many levels! Personally, I have lost a close family member to cancer, and seeing what HBF does for children in the community makes my involvement feel full circle. Professionally, I work for the Duke Cancer Institute, and I know that the work HBF does helps our patients’ families, and that means a lot to me as well!”

Meet London Lamoureux, a KidsCAN! Scholarship recipient and Truman State University student dedicated to storytelling and her community.

London participated in KidsCAN! through Siteman Cancer Center/Barnes-Jewish Hospital after her mom was diagnosed with cancer. Through KidsCAN!, she and her siblings met other children going through similar experiences, made crafts, attended family events and learned how to better understand what cancer meant.

“I was a little less confused and can now comfortably talk about my mom thanks to the organization being there for me when I was so young.”

Today, London is involved with the Truman Media Network, where she has worked as a photographer, writer and helped bring back its video production program. She is also involved in communication and creative arts opportunities on campus.

London is the youngest of three siblings, all of whom have received support through the KidsCAN! Scholarship program.

For 26 years, the Holt Brothers Foundation has been there to remind kids and families facing cancer that they don’t have to navigate it alone. Mimi’s story is one of the many that makes those 26 years so meaningful.

Meet Mimi Moreschi Pare, a KidsCAN! Scholarship recipient and now a student at Washington University in St. Louis!

During her mother’s cancer journey and the uncertainty of the pandemic, KidsCAN! helped Mimi and her family stay connected.

“I learned that my sisters were feeling many of the same things I was, and that I wasn’t alone.”

Now, Mimi is beginning her journey at WashU through its accelerated engineering program while continuing to build community through theater, music and sailing.

As we celebrate 26 years of supporting children and families impacted by cancer, we’re proud to celebrate students like Mimi and all that lies ahead for them.

A lot can change in 26 years. 🤍

In 2000, Torry was taking the field with the St. Louis Rams, Terrence was suiting up for NC State, Liz was just starting high school… and some of our team wasn’t even here yet!

26 years later, we’re all part of the same team, carrying forward a mission that started with one family’s experience and has grown to support families navigating cancer across North Carolina and beyond.

As we celebrate 26 years of the Holt Brothers Foundation, we’re especially grateful for the volunteers who continue to show up with creativity, dedication and a shared commitment to our mission.
