With Gratitude and Growth: The Closing of Threat to Thriving Inc.

It is with great excitement, reflection, and gratitude that I share the news: Threat to Thriving Inc. will be closing its doors. This decision marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. As someone who has always believed in the principles of experimenting, evolving, and empowering (The 3 E’s), I know this step aligns with my commitment to growth and positive change.

Why this decision?
The journey of Threat to Thriving Inc. has been nothing short of transformative. Founded in 2019, the nonprofit was rooted in my passion for reducing recidivism, fostering community, and a years, we have engaged in countless collaborations, supported small businesses, volunteered, and brought attention to the urgent need for second chances, particularly among African-American men and marginalized communities. From writing five books centered on family and community to spending my own resources to support others, I poured my heart into this mission.

However, as with any experiment, it’s essential to evaluate what works and what doesn’t. Despite my unwavering commitment, the numbers, feedback, and lack of consistent public support have made it clear: it’s time to move in a different direction.

This decision comes from a place of love and honesty. Loyalty is a noble virtue, but when it binds us to things no longer aligned with our purpose, it can hinder growth. I’ve learned that prioritizing one’s own well-being isn’t selfish; it’s essential. To truly practice what I preach, I must step back from what no longer serves the mission or myself effectively.

Closing Threat to Thriving Inc. isn’t a failure; it’s a profound realization. This nonprofit’s journey has been filled with lessons, and I’m proud of the seeds planted and the hearts touched along the way. I want to thank every collaborator, supporter, and partner who believed in this mission. Your contributions were seen, valued, and deeply appreciated.

How are present day incarceration practices a remnant of slavery?

At Threat to Thriving Inc., we are committed to rewriting the narrative surrounding reentry into society after incarceration. Central to our mission is raising awareness about the systemic challenges that returning citizens face, which are deeply rooted in historical legislation.

The 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution famously banned slavery and involuntary servitude, yet it carved out a significant exception: ‘except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.’ This clause has perpetuated a form of legal involuntary servitude within our prison systems, where, as of a January 2024 report by Edgeworth Economics, states like Florida do not compensate the majority of their prison workforce.

Our efforts at Threat to Thriving Inc. focus on educating the public, communities, and families about effective strategies to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. By understanding the historical underpinnings and current realities faced by those who have served their sentences, we can better support their journey towards successful reintegration. Our goal is not just to aid in navigating these systemic barriers but to advocate for meaningful reforms that address these injustices at their core.

Together, we can build a more just and supportive framework for returning citizens, ensuring that once a sentence is served, true freedom and opportunity await them.

Did you know that our children are in their care for about 80% of the time during the 180 school days out of 365? That makes educators our partners in this journey of life.
