HISTORY OF THE COLORADO COACHES
OF GIRLS SPORTS (CCGS)

“I really had one goal, to help young women become better individuals, and I thought I could do that best through coaching. I thought if young women could be winners in sports, they could be winners in life. I felt the young women had as much right to have competitive athletics as the young men.” Ruby Miller, Hall of Fame Inductee, 1979. The

Colorado Women’s Coaches Association (CWCA) held its first meeting on April 23, 1970. There were 34 women teacher/coaches in attendance. In 1982, the name was changed to the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports (CCGS). The objective of providing equitable athletic programs for girls in high school is the same today as it was back in 1970. CCGS’ goals are to:

1. Provide equal representation for the female athletes in the state of Colorado.

2. Provide statewide communication to all middle, junior, and senior high school coaches involved in girls athletics.

3. Communicate Title IX interpretations through meetings with the Colorado Associations of School Boards.

4. Provide additional state-sanctioned playoffs for senior girls. CCGS has sponsored the CCGS All-State Games since 1978, currently including basketball (1978), volleyball (1978), and softball (1986). CCGS has also established the CCGS Hall of Fame honoring dedicated and committed individuals who have been instrumental in the development of girls athletics in the state of Colorado. In addition, CCGS provides representation to the Colorado High School Activities Association and the State Games Committee.

Congratulations to Mary Kvamme on her CHSAA Hall of Fame Selection!
Mary Kvamme truly blazed a trail for girls’ athletics in Colorado. During her time at Arvada West High School, she didn’t just coach—she built opportunities, launching programs in volleyball, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, and track & field at a time when those opportunities for girls were far from guaranteed.

Her impact goes far beyond an incredible 363–164 career volleyball record and a 1977 state championship. Mary was a tireless advocate for equity in athletics, helping establish the foundation for girls’ sports programs across Jefferson County and throughout Colorado. Her work in developing feeder programs and pushing for recognition and statistics for female athletes helped validate and elevate girls’ sports in a meaningful way.

Mary’s legacy also runs deep within the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports community—as a founding member, Hall of Fame inductee, and dedicated supporter through her work with the Ruby Miller Scholarship.

As Mary shared:
“Mostly, it’s just a great honor… I feel very honored to have been selected out of a large group of people without whom I would not be here tonight.”

We couldn’t agree more—this honor is so well deserved. Thank you, Mary, for your vision, leadership, and lasting impact on generations of female athletes.

Champions. Legacy. Colorado Roots.

Congratulations to the UCLA Bruins women's basketball team on an incredible National Championship!

We are especially proud to celebrate the Colorado connections that helped make this moment possible:
⭐ Lauren Betts – NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player
⭐ Sienna Betts
⭐ Michaela Onyenwere – Chicago Sky standout, UCLA alum, and former Grandview High School star

A special shoutout to Josh Ulitzky — head coach at Grandview High School, former CCGS Basketball Co-Chair, and the coach who helped develop all three of these incredible athletes. An amazing example of the impact Colorado coaches have on the national stage.

At Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports, we are all about celebrating excellence, honoring our roots, and lifting up the next generation of athletes and leaders.

Colorado impact. National stage. Championship standard.

What a weekend. Seriously… one of those you wish you could bottle up and keep.

Huge congratulations to our Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports (CCGS) 2026 All-State Teams.

This wasn’t just about great basketball—it was about legacy.

These young women stepped into something bigger than themselves. They carried forward a tradition built by generations who fought for girls to have a place in this game. And the way they showed up—competing, leading, supporting one another—that’s exactly what this platform was meant to be.

To our players:
You didn’t just represent your schools… you represented the future. And if this weekend was any indication, that future is in really good hands.

To our coaches:
Thank you for pouring into these young women. The impact goes way beyond the court.

And to everyone who helped make this happen—behind the scenes, on the floor, in the stands—this is how we keep building something that matters.

Proud of all of you.
Keep rising. 💜
