Manuscript Found in a Bottle is beloved by us at the Baltimore Poe House for many reasons. Not only is it a intriguing piece of prose but it is also Poe's first ever paid for work, written here on Amity Street! Poe entered the piece to the 'Saturday Visiter Awards' and won first place having his work printed in the newspaper and taking home the prize money. (This is why we called our contest the 'Saturday Visiter Awards' too!)

You may have seen the quote; "There is no beauty without some strangeness" attributed to Poe in the past, but did you know he never said it? 🖤💀
In his story Ligeia Poe's character misquotes Francis Bacon and says the quote in the image above. The original quote from Francis Bacon is, "There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion."
