Women in the Bible Whom God Spoke To Directly or Through Dreams, Visions, or Angels
Throughout Scripture, God revealed Himself not only to men but also to women, showing His sovereignty and His personal involvement in the lives of His people. While the number of recorded instances is fewer than with men (largely due to patriarchal cultural contexts), the Bible still highlights numerous moments where God communicated directly with women — through angels, visions, dreams, or His own voice.
1. Eve – The First Woman Addressed by God
Type of encounter: Direct speech
“Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’” – Genesis 3:13
God spoke directly to Eve in the Garden of Eden after the fall, questioning her actions and declaring the consequences of sin (Genesis 3:13–16). This was a direct divine conversation.
2. Sarah – Spoken to by God and Angels
Type of encounter: Angelic visitation and direct confirmation by God
“Then they said to him, ‘Where is Sarah your wife?’ And he said, ‘She is in the tent.’ The LORD said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.’” – Genesis 18:9–10
The “LORD” (YHWH) and two angels visited Abraham and Sarah. The LORD Himself spoke concerning Sarah’s future child Isaac. Later, Sarah laughed and God questioned her laughter (Genesis 18:13–15).
3. Hagar – Spoken to Twice by the Angel of the LORD
Type of encounter: Angelic appearance (the Angel of the LORD)
“The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness…” – Genesis 16:7–12
Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian maidservant, encountered the Angel of the LORD twice. The first time, He instructed her to return to Sarah and prophesied about her son Ishmael (Genesis 16:7–13). The second time, He comforted her when she and Ishmael were dying of thirst (Genesis 21:17–19). Hagar even named God, calling Him El Roi, “the God who sees me.”
4. Rebekah – Received a Prophecy from God
Type of encounter: Direct divine revelation
“And the LORD said to her, ‘Two nations are in your womb…’” – Genesis 25:23
When Rebekah inquired of God about the struggle between her unborn twins, Esau and Jacob, the LORD directly revealed their destinies — that the older would serve the younger.
5. Rachel and Leah – Spoke with God Indirectly Through Jacob’s Revelation
Type of encounter: Indirect revelation through Jacob’s vision (Genesis 31:11–13)
Though God did not speak directly to Rachel or Leah, Jacob conveyed His message to them about leaving Laban’s household. They responded affirmatively, recognizing God’s intervention.
6. Miriam – Prophetess Who Heard from God
Type of encounter: Prophetic calling; indirectly rebuked by God
“Suddenly the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron and Miriam, ‘Come out, you three…’ And He said, ‘Hear my words…’” – Numbers 12:4–8
Miriam was a prophetess (Exodus 15:20). When she and Aaron opposed Moses, God Himself spoke directly to all three, rebuking her for challenging His chosen servant.
7. Manoah’s Wife (Mother of Samson)
Type of encounter: Angelic appearance (Angel of the LORD)
“And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, ‘Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.’” – Judges 13:3
The Angel of the LORD appeared first to Manoah’s wife announcing Samson’s birth and Nazarite calling. Later He appeared again in front of both Manoah and his wife, confirming His message.
8. Hannah – Heard by God in Prayer
Type of encounter: Answered prayer through divine intervention
“And Eli answered, ‘Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.’” – 1 Samuel 1:17–20
Though God did not audibly speak to Hannah, He directly responded to her prayer by granting her a son, Samuel. Her prophetic song in 1 Samuel 2 reflects divine inspiration.
9. Abigail – Spoke Prophetically with Divine Wisdom
Type of encounter: Spirit-inspired speech (implied divine influence)
Abigail’s words to David (1 Samuel 25:28–31) were filled with divine insight about his kingship and God’s justice. Though Scripture does not record a direct vision, her speech reveals spiritual discernment inspired by God.
10. The Widow of Zarephath – Spoken To by God Through Elijah
Type of encounter: Indirect divine word through a prophet
“Then the word of the LORD came to him [Elijah], saying…‘I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’” – 1 Kings 17:8–9
The widow obeyed a divine command communicated through Elijah. Though she did not hear directly from God herself, she was part of a divine communication chain.
11. The Shunammite Woman – Encounter with Elisha as a Prophet of God
Type of encounter: Indirect revelation through prophetic miracles (2 Kings 4)
This woman received miraculous intervention from God through Elisha — conception, resurrection of her son — showing divine communication through prophetic action.
12. Esther – Guided by Providence Rather Than Direct Speech
Type of encounter: Divine providence without direct speech
No audible voice or vision is recorded for Esther, but God’s providence guided her actions for Israel’s deliverance (Book of Esther). His silence was strategic yet active.
13. Mary (Mother of Jesus) – Angelic Visitation from Gabriel
Type of encounter: Angelic appearance (Gabriel)
“And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.’” – Luke 1:30–33
The angel Gabriel announced Jesus’ miraculous conception and divine identity. Mary’s response (“Let it be to me according to your word”) shows total submission to God’s will.
14. Elizabeth – Spoke by the Holy Spirit
Type of encounter: Divine inspiration through the Holy Spirit
“And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit…” – Luke 1:41–45
The Spirit revealed to Elizabeth that Mary carried “the mother of my Lord.” This prophetic utterance came directly from divine revelation.
15. Mary Magdalene – Jesus Appeared After Resurrection
Type of encounter: Direct appearance and speech by Jesus Christ (the risen Lord)
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned and said to him…‘Rabboni!’” – John 20:16–17
The resurrected Christ spoke directly to Mary Magdalene before anyone else, commissioning her to announce His resurrection — making her the first witness of the risen Lord.
16. Women at the Tomb – Spoken To by Angels and Jesus
Type of encounter: Angelic and direct appearance by Jesus
“But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid…He is risen.’” – Matthew 28:5–10
The women who came to Jesus’ tomb were addressed by angels and then met Jesus Himself on their way back — both heavenly messengers and Christ confirmed His resurrection.
17. Anna the Prophetess – Received Divine Revelation Through the Spirit
Type of encounter: Prophetic revelation via Holy Spirit
“She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” – Luke 2:38
The Holy Spirit revealed Jesus’ identity as Messiah to Anna as she worshiped in the temple.
