Rush was on the verge of being dropped by their label after the commercial failure of their previous album, Caress of Steel. Faced with the ultimatum to write something more commercial, the trio instead decided to sacrifice their professional safety to record the 20-minute epic 2112.

Struggling against the skepticism of their management, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson poured their technical prowess and philosophical themes into a record that defied every industry rule. The pressure was immense, as they knew that if the album failed, their journey as a band would likely come to an end.

Turning point arrived when the album became an unexpected hit, proving that their audience valued their uncompromising vision over simple pop structures.
