🔥 Wildfire Update – South Georgia

An estimated 27,000+ acres of wildfires are intensifying across the region, with evacuations underway in multiple communities. Heavy smoke and dangerous conditions remain as dry weather persists. Please stay weather aware, follow all local guidance, and keep those impacted in your thoughts and prayers.

“This is a serious and evolving situation,” said Tim Lowrimore, President & CEO of the Georgia Forestry Association. “Our thoughts are with the wildland firefighters, families, businesses and communities being impacted. We urge all Georgians to remain vigilant. Preventing additional fires right now is critical as responders work to manage this emergency.”

We commend the Georgia Forestry Commission and first responders working around the clock to contain these fires and protect lives, property, and working forests.

GFA stands with our forestry community and is committed to supporting long-term forest health, resilience, and responsible management.

Since yesterday’s dedication of Sims Park, we have heard from several people who shared that they did not know about the Build Hope application period, and we want to respond with both compassion and clarity.

The Hope Initiative’s Build Hope Program application was publicly shared last year through community channels, including the City of Douglas, GA Government, and remained open through July 31, 2025. This phase of the program followed a defined application window and specific eligibility requirements, which means families had to apply during that time in order to be considered.

That said, we fully understand why some feel disappointed or discouraged. When a community has experienced this much loss, every missed opportunity feels personal. We do not take that lightly.

Please know this: the fact that someone was not part of this particular process does not mean their need is unseen or unimportant. This program had limited capacity and a structured process, but our heart remains the same: to serve Coffee County with fairness, dignity, and hope.

We will continue sharing future opportunities, resources, and pathways to help as clearly and widely as possible. We truly wish we could do this for everyone, and we remain committed to doing for some what we wish we could do for all. 🫶🏼
