Central Mass Disaster Animal Response Team CMDART is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We provide information, training, support, supplies and

We are prepared to manage animals in disasters or other emergencies when local resources become overwhelmed or need added support. We also provide other prevention and public education services to reduce or minimize the need for disaster response altogether. CMDART actively promotes, whenever possible and
reasonable, aiding and supporting owner-assisted care for one's own animals during a disaster. By aiding the animals during a disaster, we reduce the mental and physical impact of the incident on both the owner and animal. We also help reduce the risk of compromising public safety when owners refuse to leave without their pets or when they show up at human evacuation sites where there is no provision for their animals.

🚨WOW: In Concórdia, Brazil, a little dog got trapped under tons of earth and debris after a wall collapsed. He spent more than a day buried, while his family waited in anguish for any sign that he was still alive.

When it already seemed impossible to find him, a faint bark broke the silence. The neighbors heard it and immediately sought help.

The Volunteer Firefighters and Civil Defense arrived at the scene and began a complicated operation to locate him and pull him out from under the rubble.

After long hours of effort, what everyone had been hoping for happened: the little one was rescued alive!

At 4 a.m., in temperatures of -7°C, Alisa Teptiuk faced an impossible choice: keep moving toward safety or stay with the dog who could no longer walk.

She chose both. Fleeing Kyiv with her husband and family, Alisa had already traveled nearly 100 miles when the roads became impassable.

The final 11 miles to the Polish border had to be crossed on foot, through darkness and freezing cold. Pulya, their 12-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd, tried to keep up but collapsed repeatedly.

Passing drivers urged the family to leave her behind, but Alisa refused. She and her husband, Dmytro, took turns carrying Pulya on their shoulders through the snow until they reached the border.

A photograph of Dmytro carrying the exhausted dog became one of the crisis’s most widely shared images.

But the moment captured something even bigger than the journey itself.

They were leaving their home, but they refused to leave a member of their family behind.

They reached safety together, because abandoning Pulya was never an option.

In my prayer time tonight, I'm lifting up all of the Animal Control Officers in our region and beyond. I've lifted the ones I know one by one by name in prayer tonight for God's covering and strength to do their work everyday. Our culture is under so much stress. The stress is traveling down the leash to so many animals, (if they have a human at the end of a leash at all.).
Animal Control Officers have historically been under appreciated and even disregarded as a respectable profession.
Having come to know so many of them through the Animal Disaster Response Team and working in disasters, I can tell you that they have enormous skill, compassion, and bravery to face animals and humans alike, many times the latter being the more difficult challenge.
Many of these Animal Control Officers are working 24/7 with low pay, no break, insufficient equipment,( even basic uniforms, vehicles, response equipment, including safety equipment) .
If you're a compassionate pet owner, find out how you can help your local animal control, even in some minor way.

As devastating wildfires continue to spread across the Spokane, Washington region, thousands of people have been forced to evacuate; many facing the heartbreaking uncertainty of how to keep their pets safe. 💔

At the request of the Washington Emergency Management Division, Best Friends Animal Society is leading the Washington State Pet Task Force, coordinating the statewide companion animal response alongside emergency management and rescue partners. Our teams are helping reunite pets with their families, supporting evacuation shelters, distributing emergency supplies, and working with local and national partners to create space for displaced pets.

Your support makes this lifesaving work possible. Please consider donating to Best Friends' Emergency Response Fund to provide emergency shelter, veterinary care, pet food, transportation, and critical resources for pets and the people working tirelessly to save them: https://bfas.io/spokanefires26 🧡

Your donation will support Best Friends' wildfire response efforts in Washington, helping provide urgent care, resources, and support to pets affected by the wildfires in and around the Spokane area. If funds donated exceed the amount Best Friends spends on direct wildfire response, those funds will...

“I wasn't prepared.”

When Connie Foy received an evacuation order Friday evening, she quickly left her Spokane-area home with her cat, Jethro, not knowing what she would find when she returned.

With no family nearby and no updates on her home, Connie found a safe place to stay at a Red Cross shelter. There, she received meals, comfort and a comfort kit with essentials like a toothbrush and face wash.

“You all have been angels,” Connie said. “I didn't know how badly I needed to wash my face and brush my teeth until I got here.”

Stories like Connie's are unfolding across the Spokane area, where more than 65,000 people have been displaced by devastating wildfires. As Red Cross volunteers support families impacted by the Spokane-area wildfires, disaster teams are also responding to wildfires burning across the West, from Washington to Southern California. More than 40 Red Cross shelters are open, providing a safe place to stay, meals, health services and other critical support.

This work is only possible because of compassionate supporters like you.
