Iowa Newcomer Integration Community & Exchange (IA NICE)

The mission of IA NICE is to assist Ukrainians seeking humanitarian parole with obtaining sponsorship to enter the US and integration in our local community. Direct beneficiaries of IA NICE include Ukrainians:
-currently in active war zones within Ukraine
-temporarily in refugee status in other countries

Indirect beneficiaries include:
-Th

e community – By welcoming Ukrainians, we add to our workforce and bring diversity to our community.

-Our citizens – By organizing and funding IA NICE, we give members of our community the guidance and necessary resources to sponsor families desperately needing assistance. Program Elements
Provide information about the opportunity to sponsor Ukrainians and how IA NICE makes sponsorship possible for people that want to help, but that lack the necessary knowledge about how to connect with families, how to get approval to serve as a sponsor, and how to assist Ukrainians with integration activities once they arrive. Serve the community as a point of entry for the process of Sponsoring Ukrainians and serve as an expert coordinating entity for the delivery of services and activities needed for successful sponsorship and the integration of newcomers. Provide financial support, primarily in the areas of temporary housing and living expenses, during the first few weeks to months while newcomers obtain work authorizations, employment, public benefits, and permanent housing. Collaborate with local individuals and organizations to create a welcoming, warm and supportive community where Ukrainians feel safe, appreciated and celebrated for their courage and independence as they strive to make Iowa their new home. Network and collaborate with local businesses to identify employment matches with newcomers and assist local businesses with required HR filings necessary to hire legal immigrants. Work closely with local schools to plan for the arrival and education of new school-aged children arriving from Ukraine with the goal of providing high quality educational opportunities for new students without overwhelming existing resources.

We were part of a coalition that presented Senator Grassley with a “Friend of Ukrainian National Information Service” award of appreciation today. He has been very vocal and very strong in his support of Ukraine. Please be sure to thank him and acknowledge his support. He is a force on Capitol Hill and we appreciate him hearing us and our concerns about the ongoing legal status of our (UKRANIAN) friends still in the United States.

If any state in the nation can build bipartisan support for legal controlled, practical immigration, it is ours. We are IA NICE!

If you are watching the state of the union address this evening, please look for this pin on the lapel jackets of our congressional leaders. We met with several on Capitol Hill this week and we asked them to support S.RES.236/H.R.564. - a resolution that 200,000 abducted (UKRANIAN) children must be returned as a requirement for peace negotiations. Thanks to our community, many children are safe, but all of our families have loved ones still in Ukraine.

There are more daily civilian fatalities than ever before. The war is not ending. It is escalating. Please keep all Ukrainians in your prayers and pray for peace and freedom.

Slava Ukraine!

Sharing these ICE encounter reference materials in response to questions we’ve been hearing from Ukrainians and Ukrainian American families. With so much mixed information circulating, many people are looking for clear, basic guidance.

The sheets are meant as quick references: what an officer may ask in certain situations, what you are not required to volunteer, and what responses are generally safest in the moment. They include short English scripts for real-world use, plus a Ukrainian-language supplement covering common situations such as lawful presence, an active legal process, or possible status concerns.

These materials are for general information only and are not legal advice. They do not replace guidance from an attorney. You may want to save the images to your phone or print them for easy access.

H1-B Application Policy Update and New Fees: $215 Registration and New $100,000 if selected (see details below).

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that the initial registration period for the fiscal year (FY) 2027 H-1B cap will open at noon Eastern on March 4 and run through noon Eastern on March 19, 2026. During this period, prospective H-1B cap-subject petitioners and representatives must use a USCIS online account to register each beneficiary electronically for the selection process and pay the associated $215 H-1B registration fee for each registration.

New for the FY 2027 Cap Season

The Department of Homeland Security published a final rule:

On Sept. 19, 2025, President Trump issued a Proclamation, Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers, an important initial step to reform the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program. While the proclamation does not directly impact the electronic registration process, if a petitioner has their registration selected and is eligible to file an H-1B cap-subject petition, they may need to pay an additional $100,000 fee before filing the H-1B petition as a condition of eligibility. See the Presidential Proclamation on Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers section on our H-1B Specialty Occupations page for additional details.

I love the Ukrainian tradition of caroling on Christmas. This is such a great memory. The families we help pay it forward by singing for senior citizens on Christmas Eve.
