Tracey Brame of Cooley Innocence Project discusses how getting exonerated is not the last step in the journey of wrongfully convicted individuals and how our organization has filled an important void when individuals are exonerated and released.

Yes wrongful conviction day was October second and our peers use October as a month to host events to spread awareness. Please note that as we celebrate and work tirelessly in this month, there is also November-September and the work doesn’t slow up because there are many more Women and men fighting for their freedom.

Please use this month to learn more about wrongful convictions so you can be more educated In the fight and also you can always donate to your local Innocence Organization so they can continue to save lives.

A threat to freedom for one is a threat to freedom for all.

Detroit showed up for Gary Tyler this week. The Shepard hosted Gary for a book signing and artist talk celebrating his memoir Stitching Freedom, presented by Library Street Collective with the Michigan Justice Fund and moderated by Ashley Carter.

At 17, Gary was sent to Angola, the youngest person on death row in America. He came home 41 years later. He was never exonerated and he’s been free for 10 years now.

He turned those decades into art, advocacy, and now this book. He’s proof that formerly incarcerated people care for each other, fight for each other, and refuse to be broken.

If you missed the signing, get the book. Stitching Freedom: A True Story of Injustice, Defiance, and Hope in Angola Prison.

Today is the 13th annual Wrongful Conviction Day.
There have been 3,863 exonerations and more than 36,191 years lost since 1989.
But behind every number is a person, a family, and years that can never be given back. In Michigan alone: 224 exonerations, roughly 1,836 years stolen.
This day means a lot because it’s not only an acknowledgment day for all those who had to suffer from a wrongful conviction but it’s a day of awareness for the general public to know how these issues affect our communities.
We honor the exonerees, the families, and everyone still fighting to come home. And we keep pushing for the reforms that prevent the next wrongful conviction: nearly 200 bills moved in state legislatures this year alone.

Today is Wrongful Conviction Day.

While we honor those who made it home, we cannot forget the innocent people still waking up behind prison walls, praying somebody will finally believe them.

Exoneration may open the prison door, but it does not erase what happened on the other side of it.

That is why our work cannot stop at freedom. We have to fight for healing, dignity, opportunity, and a world where fewer people ever have to survive this in the first place.

Today, see the people behind the cases. Hear our voices. Remember what was taken.

Freedom is only the beginning.

The evidence is supposed to lead to a suspect, but all too often a suspect is chosen first and then a case is made around convicting that individual no matter what the evidence points too.
