Vision must be resourced.

That was the message that carried us through this year’s Donors & Doers weekend.

We celebrated the people who make MFCF’s work possible, welcomed nearly 30 new donors and 3 new recurring donors, raised approximately $2,000, awarded a Detroit Love Fund grant to support theater and entertainment management training for Detroit youth, created space for healing and connection, and spent the weekend talking honestly about what it takes to move strong ideas from vision to impact.

We were also reminded that our communities are not short on leadership, creativity, or people willing to do the work.

What is too often missing are the resources behind them.

Thank you to every donor, doer, speaker, volunteer, board member, partner, vendor, and attendee who helped make the weekend possible.

Our Donors & Doers speaker lineup is taking shape, and there is still room for young people to help shape what happens next.

We are excited to welcome two confirmed facilitators to the 6th Annual Donors & Doers: Teen Takeover Edition:

💡 Rasheda Williams of Inspired Life Professionals will lead “Future Funded: Unlocking 21st Century Tools to Fuel Social Impact Dreams.” Participants will explore how AI and other tools can help uncover grants, scholarships, fellowships, pitch competitions, awards, and other opportunities to turn ideas into action.

🎤 Karly Spicer Moore, Founder and Executive Director of SHARE Detroit, will lead “You Don’t Have to Know Everything: Becoming a Trusted Community Connector.” Her interactive workshop will help participants learn how to identify needs, find credible community resources, and make stronger connections between people and organizations.

And we are not finished building the lineup.

This is the Teen Takeover Edition, which means young people should not only be sitting in the audience. We want them helping lead the experience!

Metro Detroit youth still have time to pitch an idea for a session, performance, demonstration, conversation, creative experience, tech activity, financial education experience, or something we have not even thought of yet.

You do not have to be a professional speaker. You just need an idea you believe other young people should experience.

Detroit youth, this is your last chance to help take over Donors & Doers!

is inviting young people to submit ideas for sessions, performances, demonstrations, conversations, creative experiences, technology activities, financial education, storytelling, and other activations for the 6th Annual Donors & Doers: Teen Takeover Edition.

Young people will not simply attend this year’s summit. They are helping shape and lead it.

Through our summer youth program, we have learned how much stronger our work becomes when teens are trusted with real responsibility, real resources, and a real platform. Now we want more young people to bring their ideas to Aya House.

MFCF is proud to announce Cheryl P. Johnson, CEO of the Coalition on Temporary Shelter, as the 2026 DTE Community Champion honoree.

Established in 2022, the DTE Community Champion Award was created in honor of DTE Corporation’s outstanding commitment to supporting diversity and helping MFCF strengthen its strategic planning and organizational vision.

Each year, the award recognizes a leader or institution whose service, generosity, partnership, and investment reflect that same spirit of community commitment.

Past recipients have included:

Black Tech Saturdays
Michigan Black Business Alliance

In 2026, Cheryl P. Johnson joins this distinguished group of honorees.

Cheryl is a longtime powerhouse in Detroit’s nonprofit and human services sector. Through her leadership, she has advanced dignity, stability, opportunity, and stronger systems of support for individuals and families across the city.

This recognition is also deeply personal to MFCF. During a critical time for MFCF and Aya House, Cheryl showed up with meaningful support, generosity, and encouragement. Her willingness to respond when it mattered most reflects the true spirit of the DTE Community Champion Award.

Thank you to our gracious host Mama Akua Community House for giving our youth leaders a fun and enriching environment to let their hair down and talent shine. ✨ Thank you to our board member Sherri Burris-Smith for organizing the experience. Fun fact, Mama Akua House is named after her mom in honor of her service as a lifelong community activist. ✊🏽
