After 41 years with Detroit Public Schools, Janet Webster Jones found her next chapter somewhere unexpected: a trip to study ancient Egypt. 💙

When classmates asked to borrow her research books, she started bringing them to sell at local fairs and bazaars. That side hustle eventually became Source Booksellers, a Detroit bookstore centered on history, culture, wellness and books by and about women.

The shop has been open on Cass Avenue since 2013, and Webster Jones, now in her 80s, still curates every title herself.

After 17 years in corporate accounting, April Anderson left her job and opened her own bakery, just 91 days later. 💙

Anderson and her wife, Michelle, used a city revitalization grant to open Good Cakes and Bakes on Detroit's Avenue of Fashion in 2013. It wasn't just a bakery. It was designed to be a gathering place for the neighborhood.

To this day, the shop posts job openings in the neighborhood paper before making them public, an intentional way of keeping opportunity close to home.

Mission accomplished.

Together with Trinity Health MI and Oakland County Michigan Works, we celebrated the completion of the pilot cohort of our Work Advance Career Readiness Training program in Pontiac.

This new program provides community members with the workplace skills and readiness training needed to pursue careers as patient care technicians and phlebotomists.

Congratulations to all!

A special thanks to both Trinity Health and to Oakland County Michigan Works! for making this program possible and to Shanell Shelby of Trinity Health, Kaino Phillips of The Clarence E. Phillips Ascend Foundation and Pontiac City Council District 1 Councilman Chris Jackson For Pontiac for sharing their insights and expertise with program participants.

Before founding an electrical company, Deana Neely researched federal contracts and saw an opportunity: Black women-owned businesses could win contracts, then subcontract to other firms. 💙

She studied for her electrical contractor's license and founded Detroit Voltage. Within six months, the company had crossed six figures.

She initially kept her identity as a Black woman owner quiet, worried it would cost her work. She changed course, and today Detroit Voltage installs EV charging stations across Detroit for DTE Energy.
