s within the community we also are committed to connecting the people and places of Southwest Detroit with the people and places of other communities. Our vision is for a Southwest Detroit with connected and informed neighbors aware of their collective assets and able to take action on behalf of their personal and community well-being. Resident-created media is an essential commodity for local communities. The media that is created forms a broad community narrative as it is collected and activated through its organization and distribution. It is important as a key to local wisdom about communities. Also residents who participate in the creation and distribution of digital media are more likely to move from collecting and sharing information to engaging in real world community actions.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

As part of the Detroit Tigers Cinco de Mayo celebration, and in support of the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Inside Southwest Detroit, renowned local artist Freddy Diaz, a southwest native and talented artist created this one of one Detroit Tigers piece for Cinco De Mayo. This piece was hand designed on a stop sign. Net proceeds benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Inside Southwest Detroit. Inside Southwest Detroit is a collection of initiatives that promote youth and community development through cultural and place-based initiatives. To learn more, please visit www.insidesouthwest.com. ANNOUNCEMENT: Don’t miss the Blessing of the Lowriders from 2:00pm - 5:00pm at Motor City Street Dance Academy at 6509 Michigan Ave Detroit, MI 48210

Inside Southwest Detroit will be hosting this year’s blessing with founder Victor Villalobos along with Dedication, GoodTimes, Majestics and Uso Car Clubs, Motor City Street Dance Academy, and Grace in Action Detroit. Come out for a day of cars, food, dancing, and art for the whole family!

For the last two years Youth in Southwest Detroit have been building the friendship, skills and confidence through our Pop Up Portrait Studio.

This year, we are expanding that work.

Through paid summer internships, workshops, photo walks, portrait studios, and darkroom sessions, youth will continue developing their creative and technical skills while providing meaningful services to their community.

Young photographers have learned to use digital and film cameras, developed photographs in our community darkroom, created hundreds of free family portraits, and had their work featured in an exhibition and publication.

Mary Luevanos, a local artist and community activist, has lived in worked in Southwest Detroit for decades. In particular her skills in storytelling and facilitation of creative processes are widely appreciated and acknowledged by local families, youth, and peers. Her dedication to craft and commitment to advocacy for many younger generations’ artists and leaders have enabled Mary to serve as an inspirational force in Southwest Detroit. Mary plays a huge role in who/what is today. ❤️✨

Over time our gathering has evolved into a creative expression of coming together and storytelling in the days around Halloween, All Saints Day, and Dia de Los Mu***os to collectively remember— that we are grateful for those who came before us, that we are a community and need each other, and that we keep us safe.

: Our annual event (formerly Angel’s Night Event) was initiated in 2012 to create a safe space where youth and adults can gather, sharing time and place, without fear of criminalization on Angel’s Night when a city-wide curfew put youth in the neighborhood at increased risk of interaction with law enforcement.

Calling all filmmakers and visual storytellers! 🎥 Come and join us for the SW Fest 2025 Film Program, hosted by Inside Southwest Detroit!
What we’re building through this program is a vision for how we create and connect, both during and beyond SW Fest. Whether you're uplifting stories rooted in Southwest Detroit or weaving connections across the city, this is a platform for spotlighting local narratives and imagining new paths forward. Together.
Screenings are happening inside of The Senate Theater Saturday from 12:30PM-1:10PM with the same line-up screening again from 3:50PM-4:30PM! Join us after the films for a meet and greet with the filmmakers
