Sometimes the community that helps you along the way becomes the community you want to give back to. Today, we're excited to introduce our 2026–2027 Communications Director, Pedro Garcia.

Pedro was born in Mexico and grew up in Cincinnati. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, where he first became involved with SHPE. The organization provided him with a sense of community and mentorship that helped him navigate his coursework and find a job after graduation.

Since then, Pedro has continued his involvement with SHPE as a professional while working as a Manufacturing Engineer. What drives him is SHPE's ability to inspire and mentor the Hispanic community in Detroit while providing opportunities for growth for the next generation of engineers.

From North Carolina to Southwest Detroit, Esaí’s journey has been shaped by engineering, community, and familia. Today, we're excited to introduce our 2026–2027 College Fair Director, Esaí Torres-Tarango.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He currently works at Ford Motor Company as a Manufacturing Ford College Graduate, serving as an Electrical Systems Integration Engineer for Ford Performance Racing.

Beyond his professional role, Esaí is actively involved with the Ford Hispanic Latino Network, SHPE, and Casa Azul de Wilson. Although he recently relocated to Michigan, he has had the privilege of serving the Southwest Detroit community through SHPE Detroit. The organization's commitment to community, leadership, and familia has allowed him to build meaningful relationships while supporting and learning from those around him. He is excited to continue serving alongside the incredible members of SHPE Detroit, contributing to the chapter's continued growth, empowering future Hispanic engineers, and strengthening our community.

From starting a SHPE chapter at her university to now helping lead the conversation online, we're excited to introduce our 2026–2027 Social Media Director, Wendy Montesinos!

Born and raised in Southwest Detroit, Wendy is passionate about giving back to her community and continuing the cycle of support and programs that she benefited from. She was introduced to SHPE by her mentors in high school, and when she realized there was no SHPE chapter at her university, she started one. Through that experience, she connected with SHPE Detroit Professional, whose members provided support as the chapter got started and became accredited.

Wendy graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy in December 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Robotics and Mechatronic Systems Engineering (RMSE). She began working at GM through the TRACK program in June 2022 and graduated from the program in August 2024. She currently works at the GM Milford Proving Grounds as a Controls Integration Engineer and serves as a board member for the GM Latino Network ERG at the MPG Chapter.

Sometimes, the path to engineering starts with realizing what you don’t want to do! Meet our 2026–2027 Professional Development Director, Abel Jaime.

Growing up in Southwest Detroit, Abel wasn’t always interested in engineering. After barely surviving chemistry, he realized that becoming a pharmacist wasn’t for him and decided to switch gears into engineering. Looking back, he’s glad he took that path and believes he made the right choice.

Abel became heavily involved with SHPE at Wayne State University, then stepped away from the organization after graduation. That changed when he attended his first SHPE professional event at GM. Since then, he’s been fully engaged with the SHPE community and is excited to continue building those connections as part of this year’s E-Board.

You’ve probably seen her work around SHPE Detroit already, but now it’s official! Meet our 2026–2027 Multimedia Director, Lily Blancas.

With a background in business administration, Lily brings strategy, creativity, and community focus to everything she does. She currently runs a small business with her best friend and supports nonprofits and local businesses across Southwest Detroit through consulting and social media.

Over the last five years, she’s been involved in nonprofit and youth-centered spaces, and she’s excited to continue that journey with SHPE Detroit Professional after previously serving as Social Media Director.

When she’s not working, you’ll probably find her writing. She’s currently working on her first book, a story centered on mental health, healing, and women’s empowerment.

She’s excited to see what we create together this year.

Great engineers start with great opportunities to learn, explore, and be supported. Today, we're introducing our 2026–2027 Future Engineers Co-Director, Eddie Martinez-Lopez.

Eddie is an engineer at Ford Motor Company, where he has worked since 2015 developing simulation software for vehicle energy management, helping make cars smarter about how they use power. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Computer Science from Purdue, along with an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Kettering University.

Eddie is drawn to the technical side of engineering, including the math, physics, and code that make things work, but he is equally passionate about mentoring younger engineers and students. He enjoys demystifying these tools and helping people see them as powers to embrace, not obstacles to fear.

Outside of work, you'll find Eddie playing guitar, competing in tennis and chess, or catching live sports.

Help us welcome Eddie in the comments!
