As a teenager, I played with those same ideologies even though I was given all of the raw material that I needed to become successful. However, at the age of 18 instead of spending my freshman year at an Ivy League University I found myself in the Wayne County Jail facing t
wo life sentences for First Degree Murder and Armed Robbery; which after 14 months spent fighting my case I was found guilty as charged and indeed sentenced to two life sentences without the chance of parole. I played with my life but the enemy didn’t play with me and I suffered greatly along with those that had the capacity to love and suffer with me. After a long and arduous fight which lasted approximately 13 years and 6 appeals later I won a new trial in the Federal District Court, under one of the most thorough judges in the region. He was known for a terminology used in prison as “locking you in” never having the possibility to ever come home. Only by the grace of God he ruled in my favor and granted me a new trial. Yet I still had to survive the onslaught of challenges from that decision by the prosecutors at the federal appellate level and also the state as well. Therefore instead of risking the inevitable I decided to yield in the ways of reason and chose to plead guilty and I accepted an 18-27 year sentence which I had already served 13 years of. I returned back to prison and served an additional five years including a flop from the Michigan Parole Board. In total I served 18 and a half years off of a natural life sentence. During that time I evolved from the N***A I was as a kid into the MAN I am today I want to share those lessons that I learned.
