FROM THE ARCHIVES - Respect the Architects exhibition at 2023

Excerpt from Resident Advisor feature:

"Resident Advisor, Detroit Techno Foundation & Underground Music Academy present an exhibition exploring some of the Detroit electronic music community's most impactful heroes.

Techno, like any other cultural movement, is not the story of individuals but the sum of many. No one person can lay claim to it. Contrary to popular belief, there have been many people whose contributions have built its legacy. These are just some of the key players who deserve to be remembered in building up a phenomenon that has reached across the world. This is a window into how America's neglected children—the descendants of enslaved Africans—changed music forever in the shadow of de-industrialisation and urban decay. This is a small homage to these individuals who helped solidify that Detroit will always be the future."

"Much has been written about the first wave of Detroit techno artists as pioneers of one of the most impactful genres in the world," said Underground Music Academy, the curators of the list. "This list is designed to shine a light on the unsung heroes who ghost-wrote classic records, created the structures, spaces and scenarios that allowed techno to grow beyond the wildest dreams of its inventors, and the mentors who have supported and inspired the subsequent waves of Detroit techno artists in finding their sound and place in the musical world."

FROM THE ARCHIVES - Respect the Architects exhibition at 2022. "Resident Advisor is collaborating with Detroit Techno Foundation on a new exhibition at this year's Movement festival.

Curated by Underground Music Academy (UMA), Respect The Architects celebrates overlooked techno artists in the city. Pairing text by Tajh Morris, AKA Turtle Bugg, with illustrations by Tony Whlgn, it will be located at the festival's former Underground Stage. Prints of the artwork will be available for sale, with all proceeds split between UMA, cofounded by local producer Waajeed in 2020, and Whlgn's non-profit organization, Leaders Amongst Leaders."
