We work to close literacy gaps, increase access to high-quality books, and build home and classroom libraries. Birdie’s Bookmobile is a Detroit-based nonprofit bringing the joy of reading directly to children and families. We work to close literacy gaps by increasing access to high-quality books, building home and classroom libraries, and inspiring lifelong readers across Detroit. Since launching

in 2022, Birdie’s has distributed nearly a quarter of a million books through its Bookmobile, free school Book Bashes (our version of a book fair), and Birdie’s Book Nest (Detroit’s Not-So-Ordinary Book Bank). Together, these programs help ensure that every child has the chance to read, learn, and dream. We also operate Birdie’s STEM Lab, which brings hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math experiences to schools, camps, and community partners, connecting literacy and STEM in meaningful ways. Proudly nested within the Birdie’s family of companies — Birdie’s Bookmobile, Birdie’s Book Nest, Birdie’s STEM Lab, Nesting Birds Education, and Nesting Birds Publishing.

Finger-knitting bracelets gave campers the chance to slow down, get creative, and make something that was uniquely their own. From choosing the colors they wanted to use to learning each step of the process, Nia made sure every camper had the encouragement they needed along the way.

Children may remember an activity, but they never forget the teacher who made them feel capable.

Some very special visitors stopped by Birdie's Day Camp!

Our campers had the opportunity to meet, pet, and learn about a variety of friendly farm animals while asking questions and discovering what makes each one unique. Experiences like this spark curiosity, build confidence, and help children develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

Books that Take Flight is our Friday Fun Day theme.

Today's Project: Story Kites!

A good book can take you anywhere (even before a kite leaves the ground).

Campers are sketching out their kite designs inspired by the books they just finished reading.

Each kite will become a visual book review, illustrating where the story took them, the characters they met, what happened, and whether they'd recommend it to a friend.

Reading, creativity, and imagination are all coming together in one project. Now we just need a little wind!

We asked Birdie's Bookworms, our book club, what they loved most about reading A Wrinkle in Time.

It wasn't the snacks, the activities, or even the book discussions.

It was the quiet.

The chance to find a comfortable spot, settle in with a good book, and simply be still for a little while.

In a world that doesn't slow down very often, we thought that was a pretty wonderful answer. 💛

4 Birdie's Literacy Champions. 8 hubs. 8 weeks of storytelling, writing, creativity, and imagination.

Over the past eight weeks, Birdie's Storytelling & Writing Lab has brought books, journals, markers, Polaroid cameras, and plenty of inspiration to Brilliant Detroit hubs across Detroit.

Together, we've created original comics, explored the power of onomatopoeia, discovered that pictures tell stories, developed unforgettable characters, and filled page after page with stories, ideas, and imagination.

As we enter our final week, we're celebrating every story shared, every page written, and every young writer who has trusted us with their words.

We’re grateful for partners who continue to show up for our mission year after year.

Got books? We accept new and gently used board books, picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade books, teen/YA novels, graphic novels, and children's nonfiction books.
