⚠️ Content Warning: This post discusses breastfeeding and may include images related to nursing/pumping.

Whew… where do I even start.

Me and my niece DID THAT. 🥹💛

I am so, so proud of her.

When I came down to Mississippi, one thing I really wanted to encourage her to try was breastfeeding. I know it’s not easy. I know it can feel overwhelming. And I know sometimes you just want to give up.

Last Friday, I brought her a breast pump. Since then, we have been trying EVERY day to figure this thing out. Putting it together. Taking it apart. Watching videos. Guessing. Laughing. Getting frustrated.

At one point… we gave up. 😩😂

But I wasn’t about to let that be the end of the story.

I called our A Girl Like Me Inc. breastfeeding tech back in Detroit to schedule a one-on-one virtual session for her this upcoming week. I started calling WIC offices down here in Mississippi to make sure she had local support too. Thank God our AGLM tech was ready and willing to jump in and help virtually. That’s what community looks like.

But back to the pump…

This afternoon we were setting up the play area and the newborn bed, I was on FaceTime with my daughters and we said, “Nope. We’re going to figure this out TODAY.”

I told my niece, “Wait. Let me get this right for you. I leave tomorrow and you need this for sure.” 😅

So I started taking it apart again. Reading. Adjusting. Snapping pieces together.

And when we finally put it together the RIGHT way…

I literally shouted. 😭😂

We tried it.

And y’all…

WE GOT MILK.

OMG.

I felt like we hit the lottery. And honestly? We did. For that baby.

I was so excited I had to call everybody. I was screaming. Laughing. Crying.

My niece got this. 💪🏾

This wasn’t just about a pump. It was about confidence. Support. Not giving up. It was about reminding her that she is capable — and that she is not alone.

This is why I do what I do.
This is why A Girl Like Me Inc. exists.
This is what the village looks like.

So proud of her. So grateful I could be here.
God is so good. 💛

And let me tell y’all something…

For her FIRST time pumping successfully, my niece was able to produce almost 2 ounces 🥹😭💛

OMG!!!

We were screaming. Laughing. Praising God. I was in shock.

Almost 2 ounces on the first real try after days of figuring it out?! That is not small. That is BIG.

That is confidence.
That is breakthrough.
That is “don’t give up.”
That is nourishment for her baby.

We are so, so happy.

It may seem like “just milk” to some people… but to us? It was victory. It was proof that her body is working. It was relief. It was empowerment.

And I could not be more proud of her. 💪🏾💛

Sometimes social media only sees the “business move.”

But I didn’t come down to Mississippi just to meet with the people that's helping to expand A Girl Like Me Inc. this time.

I came to help my 21-year-old niece.

She just gave birth 8 days ago to her Son… and she also has a one-year-old. Remind me of my last 2 kids I had the same way, I had a 1 year and a newborn! My plan was to be here for her delivery, but life had other plans — especially with her dealing with thyroid issues along the way.

What I didn’t expect was to witness something that broke my heart in a whole different way.

Sometimes after birth women experience the body going through something called UTERINE INVOLUTION, when the uterus has to shrink from the size of a watermelon back down to the size of a pear. Also when Breastfeeding it can release oxytocin, which causes intense contractions to help that process happen.

If you’ve never seen it, from the pain I saw she was having, it looked like she was giving birth all over again, she couldn't even walk and needed assistance to get in the bed 😭

Seeing her on the ground in pain, healing, pushing through contractions while trying to care for two babies… it was heartbreaking. But it was also powerful.

As someone who serves moms and works alongside doulas, I can’t wait to share this experience with our community so more women understand what postpartum healing truly looks like. We talk about birth and aftercare but now I really wanna touch on Uterine Involution now too !Not all may experience.

I’m not a doula. I’m just an aunt who loves her niece deeply.

And I’m so grateful that I have strong support back home that allowed me to step away and be here — to help clean, getting food, bath and comfort the babies, and make sure she eats and rests.

Sometimes support doesn’t look like a title.
It looks like showing up.

God is so good 💜
