Sometimes social media only sees the “business move.”
But I didn’t come down to Mississippi just to meet with the people that's helping to expand A Girl Like Me Inc. this time.
I came to help my 21-year-old niece.
She just gave birth 8 days ago to her Son… and she also has a one-year-old. Remind me of my last 2 kids I had the same way, I had a 1 year and a newborn! My plan was to be here for her delivery, but life had other plans — especially with her dealing with thyroid issues along the way.
What I didn’t expect was to witness something that broke my heart in a whole different way.
Sometimes after birth women experience the body going through something called UTERINE INVOLUTION, when the uterus has to shrink from the size of a watermelon back down to the size of a pear. Also when Breastfeeding it can release oxytocin, which causes intense contractions to help that process happen.
If you’ve never seen it, from the pain I saw she was having, it looked like she was giving birth all over again, she couldn't even walk and needed assistance to get in the bed 😭
Seeing her on the ground in pain, healing, pushing through contractions while trying to care for two babies… it was heartbreaking. But it was also powerful.
As someone who serves moms and works alongside doulas, I can’t wait to share this experience with our community so more women understand what postpartum healing truly looks like. We talk about birth and aftercare but now I really wanna touch on Uterine Involution now too !Not all may experience.
I’m not a doula. I’m just an aunt who loves her niece deeply.
And I’m so grateful that I have strong support back home that allowed me to step away and be here — to help clean, getting food, bath and comfort the babies, and make sure she eats and rests.
Sometimes support doesn’t look like a title.
It looks like showing up.
God is so good 💜
