After Emancipation, Vieux Corps became the mas of choice for the newly enslaved people of St. Mark’s Parish.

Post 3 from Vieux Corps Detroit Mas Camp- Our hats are ready our masks are ready and we have our bell!

On the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday the French estate (plantation) owners would have parties and festivities amongst themselves. The conditions on the estates during these few days were relaxed and the enslaved Africans would have their own celebrations and festivities.
