Reminder! BPRD is launching a new study to evaluate options for connecting the Deschutes River Trail in southwest Bend to the Deschutes National Forest and popular recreation sites along Century Drive/Cascade Lakes Highway.

BPRD will host several opportunities for the community to participate and help the team explore ideas for connecting the trail. Community members are welcome to attend to learn more and to provide input on topics including opportunities and concerns about trail connection, accessibility, traffic considerations and more.

➡️ Thursday, April 2, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
➡️ Elk Meadows Elementary School, gymnasium, 60880 Brookswood Blvd, Bend.
➡️ The open house is drop-in style without a formal presentation.
➡️ An online open house will be available on the project webpage from April 2 to April 23.

The Deschutes River Trail South project is identified in the BPRD’s Comprehensive Plan to complete one of the last remaining gaps on the Deschutes River Trail, a trail which runs between Sunriver and Tumalo State Park. The study builds upon previous district planning efforts that occurred between 2015-2019.

Kittelson & Associates, a transportation engineering and planning consulting firm, is leading the study. There is also a stakeholder group that will meet multiple times during the study.

More details are available at the project website at www.bendparksandrec.org/project/deschutes-river-trail-south-study/.

Eagle nesting season began February 1, and Saddle Trail is temporarily closed to protect nesting raptors until their young have fledged.

Golden eagles are highly sensitive to disturbance during the nesting season. Even hikers or riders simply passing within view of a nest can cause adult birds to abandon it. If that happens, eggs can become cold, chicks may go unfed, and nests can become vulnerable to predators.

To help protect these birds during this critical time, the BLM implements seasonal wildlife closures from February 1 through August 31 in parts of the Cline Buttes area where nesting activity occurs.

Closures are an important part of balancing recreation with wildlife conservation.

The good news is that many other trails in the Cline Buttes area remain open so you can still enjoy great riding while giving these birds the space they need to raise their young.

Thank you for respecting the closure and helping protect the wildlife that makes Central Oregon’s public lands so special.

Notice of Land Division Application for Petrosa Commercial Development - comments open until March 13th @ 11:59 pm

The City of Bend Planning Division is reviewing a Land Division Application for a phased 16-lot subdivision of a 15.2 acre site in the Commercial General zone within the Petrosa Master Plan. (See link to our latest newsletter in comments for the full land use notice and comment instructions)

This proposal was the subject of a Neighborhood Meeting on November 11, 2025. The original master plan included a set aside for commercial development; the original developer then sold the land causing the commercial development to be delayed. The new owner has proposed a land division to develop several tax lots within portions of the area originally set aside for commercial development. The subject area is along Butler Market Road between Deschutes Market Road and Eagle Road.

Written comments need to be received by the city by 11:59 pm on March 13, 2026. All of the application’s background materials, including descriptions and maps, can be found by following the city provided link in the attached application notice.

Please contact us through the MVND website if you have any questions.

HEADS UP: Over 200,000,000 birds were in flight for the start of the annual Fall migration overnight! The colder than average weather has jumpstarted the migration. The eastern half of the United States was flooded with millions of nocturnal migrating birds detected on weather Doppler Radar overnight traveling south 15-20 mph at an altitude of 1,400-2,100 feet. This data is according to BirdCast.

Multiple varieties of Warblers along with American Redstart, Viero and Eastern Wood-Peewees among other species are on the move.

YOU CAN HELP — turn off your outdoor lights! Consider dimming or turning off unnecessary outdoor lights which can negatively impact natural nocturnal bird populations and migrations over the next few weeks. Light pollution can disorient, confuse and ultimately interfere or injure nocturnal birds.
